Hi Dilene, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started my own business Dilene Realty Group (DRG), I knew that success would depend not only on my passion for the craft but on building a solid foundation of structure and processes. According to a *Forbes* article on why businesses fail within the first five years, a lack of proper systems and operations is often a major factor. During those early years, many business owners focus on perfecting their service or product but neglect to build out the crucial infrastructure behind the scenes. This includes establishing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), analyzing historical data to understand sales cycles and seasonal trends, and implementing strategies like time blocking to maximize productivity.
By focusing on these “back-end” essentials, I aimed to build a business that wasn’t just good at what it did, but also capable of scaling and weathering challenges. This approach ensures the business runs smoothly, retains customers, and adapts to changes, setting it up for long-term success. You can’t sustain growth without first laying the groundwork.

Getting to where we are today was certainly not easy. As with any business, we faced challenges along the way, especially in the early stages of building a reliable infrastructure and strong client base. Overcoming these obstacles required resilience, continuous learning, and the ability to adapt to an ever-changing real estate market. One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying connected to the needs of our clients while also refining internal processes to drive long-term success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, we’d have an amazing week packed with relaxation, live music, and the best soul food Dallas has to offer. We’d kick off our mornings with a luxurious spa day at *The Joule* (https://www.thejouledallas.com/), where we could unwind in their world-class facilities and enjoy an electrifying massage to set the tone for the day.
For live music, we’d head to the legendary *The Kessler Theater*, known for its intimate setting and eclectic lineup of talented musicians. It’s a great place to vibe and enjoy quality performances in an artsy, laid-back atmosphere.
To cap off the day, we’d dine at *Brunch Room Bistro* (https://brunchroombistro.com/), one of the top spots for authentic soul food in Dallas. With mouth-watering dishes like fried catfish, collard greens, and cornbread, it’s the perfect end to a day filled with music and relaxation. The week would be filled with experiences that capture the best of what Dallas has to offer for those who enjoy great music, food, and company.

I would dedicate my shoutout to my parents, Troy Sr, and Marva Scurlark who were my greatest cheerleaders and provided the backbone of support, encouragement, and structure that shaped my journey as a business owner. Their unwavering belief in me and the values they instilled have been instrumental to my success. I credit them for fostering the resilience and determination that drive me every day.
