We had the good fortune of connecting with Diego Taormina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diego, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I decided to start the station for the pure love of the music and the radio industry over all. Growing tired of the pay to play era that most music platforms and stations have inherited over time. Just being a radio dj for so long I have seen many great bands that have been discovered but never got any radio play or any attention on social media because either they were not signed or they were signed and their record label would shelf their music as opposed to getting them out there or they just over all were so new to the industry that they didn’t know where to start their selves. Here there is plenty of room on our servers for us to spin the greatest rock monsters of our time and a undiscovered ‘bar band’ from nowhere ville USA and they are all on the same level playing field.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
To get where I am at today was not easy. Lots of learning curves and just growing up overall has led to where I am at today currently in my career. In the beginning I was like twenty six and thought that radio was all about playing what you wanted to hear and then going to shows for free and getting merch for free and drinking for free like a non stop party like you’d see in any music video from the 80’s. Over time learned that it wasn’t about any of that if you wanted to be taken seriously and grow in this industry. I had to bow out of it all for a few years and completely restart my way of thinking what radio really was, learning over time that it is not about the partying and popularity but its about the relationships that you gain over time. The Asylum Radio Network was created to bring together the grunge kids, emo scene, new metal kids, metal heads, punk rockers, and everyone in between to show that we can all coexist and lift up rock music once again.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nashville is such a big city seems like it is growing day to day so it is hard to pin point just one place you’d want to go but you can’t go wrong with walking down Broad Way and shooting down 2nd Ave to hit up all the unique bars and music venues as you never know who you will see or run into on any given night,
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My grandmother who seen this coming when I was seven years old also friends, family, crew, and the real ones out there.
