We had the good fortune of connecting with Deward Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deward, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
As people are realizing today our many cultural beliefs , fashions , and a society’s thinking process is changing. The movies , the music, the books, the language of the past seemly erased from existing. I’m not referring to the spoken language but of the symbolic language people abided by interacting with each other . Luckily we have YouTube and google. So , what creates our conversations ? Sports ? World affairs? Music, art? Political debate? As an artist I’m a thorn provoking and draw blood reminding people through reflections and memories not to forget the past or the future. My end goal is to have produced a body of work through my life that expresses freedom not fear. If only to inspire one person. My career will never retire professionally.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
You know when you desire something but don’t fully know how to obtain it but you keep trying. That’s been me. My art was an extension of myself. A means to demonstrate my talent or lack of it. What almost abstinently set me apart from others was my obsession to draw and paint and to interpret things in a abstract and colorful palette. Often seined remarks from my peers like business people and professionals saying that I have so much potential. It was a shame but I refused to conform. Like many , I was told I could never make a living as an artist or musician or actor. Those were foolish choices. Yet , I found freedom and self expression when I was making clay cups and dishes. Or , painting a mural. Or , commissioned to draw my characters. I gain strength in writing although I can’t write very well. Or , conceptualizing a scene or building a set. It was not easy. It is still a challenge. I consistently poured my earnings back into the art. The shows. The advertisement. I once Livid in a studio ware house with out many amities. Living a life of a bohemian. What I learned was to drop the ego. Focus on the art. I know there are other people twenty times more creative people than me. Do the thing that makes you happy. The money comes and goes. My story is reflective of so many other creative types. However, I remain proud if I can influence and open the eyes of someone else to break out of the box. Dare to be different. Be you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This depends on the type of person and what activities they enjoy. A hike at the Dallas Nature Center. A swim at Lake Levon . A bike ride at Cedar Creek park. Or , get a burger at Lee’ Harvey’s in Dallas or catch a band at House of Blues. May be take in a ball game in Arlington, TX . Most of my friends enjoy simple things. A bond fire , grilling and just sitting around catching up. Talking heads about dreams and outlines for projects. Most of us like to hit flea markets and old antique stores. Or , go location scouting for future movie projects. Just spending quality time together is priceless.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well….I’m connected to so many creative types there is a list. Mike Buckendorf lives in Oklahoma. His Ten Point Buck Productions and his band Retro-Rockets plus his talents for writing and making films and acting deserve attention. A highly intellectual individual. Thoroughly a pleasure to collaborate with and work ,we do well together. Also , Dean Ouazzaa or Khireddine Ouazaa of Dark eye films. We have been friends for years. He took my stories and worked them into scripts and ultimately into our films. I’d be nowhere if not for the creative combination we have offered each other over the years. These two guys will astonish anyone and are worthy of attention. Also, not least. Fred Keel with Ocean Raising productions is a film maker , writer and comic book artist. His current comic Queen Cobra is moving Fred to convention and book store showings. Aspiring to future greatness. I was fortunate enough to have acted in his faith based film ” The Great Alter” . Both Khireddine Ouazaa and Fred Keel live in the DFW area. Don’t forget the Blaze brothers production company. If not for them. “The Front” available on Amazon prime would still be a story on paper and a game board least played… https://www.facebook.com/TheFrontSeries https://www.facebook.com/TheBlazeBrothersCompany
