We had the good fortune of connecting with Detra Harrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Detra, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think about risk like this, if there is no risk, then there is no reward. Taking risks have been a common theme throughout both my life and my career. Does taking risks always work? No. But I would say that the majority of the risks that I have taken have warranted great results.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is a mobile spa and mobile makeup studio, meaning that I go to the client and provide whatever service that they have booked. I have clients throughout the DFW metroplex. I am most proud of my decision to even start this business. Being the first entrpeneur in my family makes me proud as well. I got to where I was today with hard work, it’s not easy. I also have to shout out my clients who refer potential clients to me often. Being an entrepeneur there will always be challenges, you just have to work through them and move forward. A lesson that I have learned along the way is never ever give up. Stay strong. Stay determined. I guess I would want the world to know that I’m just a woman who took a chance on entrepenership after feeling like the corporate world didnt’ accept me and wasn’t for me. I’m just trying to help people in my own little way. I want people when they think about my brand to say “Detra really took the time to care for me when she was here.” I want the client to know that I truly love what I do and hopefully my work shows that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well one of my hobbies is dining out. So we would definitely go to some of my favorite food spots. One of my favorite spots for breakfast is Our Place in Mansfield. For brunch is 360 Brunch house. Some of my favorite dinner spots are Oyshi (sushi), The Vault, Plank provisions by the sea, Uncle Julios, and Glorias. Most of these places have amazing drinks as well. There are alot of interesting people and places in this city. I would have to say that when I do go hangout it’s mostly in downtown Dallas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, my Mother first and foremost. I remember when I brought this idea to her, she was behind me 100% and that gave me the confidence boost that I needed to move forward. My family has always been supportive since day one. My mentor Ann Stewart who is an entrpeneur herself. She gives me so much motvation, we’re watching each others business grow and it’s very exciting. I would not be where I am without the support of my family and my mentor.
