We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
That you need to build up to things or wait until you are ready. I don’t agree. I think that sometimes you need to just jump in and figure it out. You take so long trying to get ready. Just go for it.

What should our readers know about your business?
Being in screenprinting I actually like the fact that I am not a huge operation. Bigger operations usually take more time and since they have so much work coming in the don’t focus on making sure everything is perfect. I try and separate myself by making sure everything is close to perfect. And customer service aspects like responding back swiftly to client questions and bending over backwards to help where I can.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Man we gotta head to the star. There is just so much to do out there. A ton of places to eat, different shopping locations and just places to chill and hang around.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Mat Fraser for sure. I pull so much inspiration and motivation from the way I should live my life and run my business just from what he does. He puts in 200% effort everyday to be the best at his sport. Likewise I try and put in that much effort everyday in my business. He does all the little things that no one wants to do. When starting a business, you have to do that. The big things like buying equipment are a given. You gotta do the little things like cold calling or walking into a business and offering your services.
