We had the good fortune of connecting with DeLisa Leonard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeLisa, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I like to think I represent the best of South Louisiana, being born and raised in Violet, La. and the Calliope Projects in New Orleans. I was able to see the unity of a small town and the toughness of the projects. It made me a humble and caring soul that will make something out of, what other perceive to be, nothing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a self-taught baker and the owner of DTDS SWEETZ, LLC. I’ve been at this for 8 years and have learned so much through trial and error and YouTube. I practice, practice, practice, and watch tons of amazing cake artists work to dish in any and everything that I can. This field is far from easy, especially when you are doing it alone. But the key is to not give up and to know how to improvise. The biggest lessons I learned would be to be open minded and to take a step back sometimes. I want the world to one day know that my brand was built from love and hard work and that my story started with depression and will end with victory.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m new here, so I’m still in tourist mode myself. But our family has fallen in love with the place called Boston’s pizza in Irving. We are a fun bunch, so definitely will end up at Pinstack for family time and I don’t think papadeaux’s will be getting old to us anytime soon. I’ve heard amazing things about the reunion tower, so I would definitely want to experience that.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
GOD of course! Jarvis, my amazing husband, he’s the person GOD used to get to me. He’s my person.
Latasha, the co-owner of VonRay Designs and my mentor, believed in me more than I believe in the beginning.
My parents, mother-in-law, and grandparents, whew I could go on for hours about their countless word of encouragement.
My best friend Denecia, she literally put her money where her mouth was when it came to supporting me. Practically funded my first year of business.
And my amazing customers.
