We had the good fortune of connecting with Dekendria Urquhart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dekendria, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk play a major role in my life. Taking risk allows me to create new opportunities for myself. Although some of the risk I take don’t go as planned, it actually exceeds my expectations. Every risk that I have taken helped me realize how I’m capable of doing anything I put my mind to

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a licensed esthetician that specialize in wax services & I am proud to be my own boss. I am excited to see what else is in store for me. One day I was scrolling on Instagram and saw a post that caught my attention about becoming a esthetician. Instantly, I made a impulse decision the next day and enrolled into beauty school. I literally did not know what I was getting myself into but something about the opportunity of making people feel and look good sat right with me, so sign me up! Starting off, this journey has not been easy whatsoever. I had a full time job during the day and went to school at night for a whole year which made it hard for me to make time for my child. I had many sleepless nights wondering if I’m doing the right thing or is this just another short term Opportunity that I’ll forget about next week..BUT I overcame those negative thoughts and obstacles by just staying focused and paying attention to the bigger picture. My support system constantly reminded me that they are here for me. & that was my biggest lesson, to just trust the process. It’s not how u start it’s how you finish. I grew up not having the best self esteem but my confidence level increased when I noticed how I grew butterflies every-time I finished with a client and saw how satisfied they were. And that’s what I want the world to know about my brand. My goal is to make sure everyone feels even more beautiful and confident everytime they walk out my door

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m open minded and Dallas has so many things to do so It’s hard to really choose . But if I were to go out and have some fun and chill vibes, I’d definitely hit up deep ellum and go to bitter end. Then after we end our night at Waffle House.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m surrounded by so many people that want to see me be great. The first person that deserves recognition is my mom. She has always been my #1 fan&has my best interest at heart.. My mom is the first person I call whenever things become overwhelming. She reassures me to not think so much and allow things to happen the way it’s supposed to. Of course , shout-out to my daughter. I got pregnant with her at 16 years old, although it was extremely hard to adjust to, she has taught me so much by simply just not giving up. Lastly, shout out to my family & friends & my softball coaches . My career would be nothing without them. I love y’all.
