We had the good fortune of connecting with Deepa Gheewala and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deepa, why did you pursue a creative career?
Since childhood, my creative brain has always been very active. I always wanted to pursue a career as an Artist. I was a software engineer by profession, and it never allowed me to leave that handsome salary and do some less paid creative jobs. It was after I had kids and I choose to stay at home, I found baking very interesting and slowly learned and improved over time. I realized this is a great time to pursue my career in the Artistic field and that is how I started growing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being an engineer and a person who loves fantasy, I love to bring life into my cakes. I try to add motion or activity into the cake, 3D characters that look cute and gives a feel of liveliness, realistic cakes, etc. with Indian flavors along with exotic combinations of flavors makes me stand out unique.

The journey wasn’t that easy, in this competitive world and having tiny little twin boys keeping Mom’s hand full all the time, I did struggle with learning, exploring, and trying out new styles and designs. “Slow and steady wins the race” – so with everything balancing I might be slow with growth but trying to be consistent and grow.

To the world, the only message I have is “We bring your dreams alive”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are several places in and around Austin to show and boast about. Lake Pflugerville is one of my favorite go-to places as it’s a walkable distance from my home. I would love to drive and show scenic views to Mount Bonnell and Pennybacker bridge(a.k.a loop 360) and watch the sunset from The Oasis restaurant at lake Travis sipping margarita. Austin Capitol is worth a watch for its beautiful architecture, it is the tallest amongst all the US capitols. Pre Covid era, 6th street, and Rainey street in Austin downtown were the best place for live music and nightlife.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am glad you asked me this question, I would like to shout out my husband’s support for my success. He has been my best critic and big support with taking care of kids, helping me with all mess, delivering a cake, and also my go-to Technical person for engineering my cakes. I would have not been able to do, what I do without him.

The second person, I want to shout out is my mentor Madhur who guided me during my initial baking phase. I use to bother her with so many questions and she would patiently answer and guide me to what should I do better.
