We had the good fortune of connecting with Deanna Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deanna, how do you define success?
I define success by showing up FOR YOU. Thats all you need to do in life both personally and professionally. Life is so much more fulfilling and enjoyable when we show up for ourselves and put in effort. Fear will try to hold you back but pushing through and taking a step forward anyway is a beautiful thing. Success is simply showing up to live life and doing so as authentically as possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Although I’m an artist, I also happen to be an HR Professional. I knew I was an extrovert and wanted to help people. I tried the nursing path but realized my eyes crossed and I was bored learning about cells. I changed directions by deciding to be in business and pursue a degree in Human Resources Management instead. I loved the idea of working to support employees and finding creative solutions. I think what sets me apart is my ability to read and connect with people regardless of age and background. I earn trust and become a credible source that people seek advice from. I never shy away from learning and believe the biggest lesson I’ve learned is always surround yourself with talented people you can learn from. If you’re the smartest person in the room then you need to change rooms.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas is such a great place to explore. I’d book an overnight stay at Hotel ZaZa, walk downtown a bit, go to Psychedelic Robot art show at the Crescent, eat at Breadwinners for brunch, book a Taco /Rita tour that takes us around Dallas, eat dinner at Trinity Groves, catch a comedy show at Hyenas, visit the Art Museum, walk around Whiterock Lake, bowl in Lakewood at Bowlski’s and grab dinner somewhere on Greenville Avenue.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have had so much support reconnecting with my creative self over the last few years. It all really started when I found an awesome community of local artists at Arts Mission (located in Oakcliff). We met weekly to talk about The Artists Way by Julia Cameron. This book is essentially my version of the bible but for creative souls. It really helps you dive into SELF, challenge your thoughts, remove artist blocks and build confidence in taking time to express yourself through art. Absolutely amazing! My biggest cheerleader and greatest support has been my boyfriend, Jacob Smith. His love, support and encouragement in all areas of my life has been a gift! I’ve also had incredible support from close friends, other artists, colleagues and family. I literally have everyone in each corner of my life lifting me up and providing support in various ways. I have been so blessed and can’t thank everyone enough!
