We had the good fortune of connecting with David Rippner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Trust!!! In order to maintain a sustainable business you have to establish trust from your customers, employees, and partners. Setting proper expectations with everyone is paramount. Additionally, when you create programs and solutions that are mutually beneficial, then you have a recipe for long term success.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My company, The Mobility Marketplace’s core solution is to provide reliable used cell phones and tablets to consumers and business customers to eliminate the need of paying full retail for a new device. All of our equipment comes from our aggressive cell phone buyback program. Data wiping and security is an integral differentiator for us. My business partner and I started the company in 2009 with limited funds, but leveraged our past experience and network from working for the large wireless providers to gradually grow our company each of the last 12 years. It was not easy as managing cash flow is a real challenge, but we never acted like a company bigger than we were. Gradually each year the business has grown and our brand has expanded across the United States. As a small to mid size company… we offer many flexible solutions to tailor programs to the particular customer’s needs and we establish business relationships to address changes in customer’s needs. That sets us apart from competitors that have more of a “canned” program with little flexibility. I have made more mistakes running my own business than I ever did working for other people and learned so much more from it. The best way to learn is to jump in, make mistakes, correct the mistakes, and not replicating those mistakes. I learned that its OK to strive for perfection and not achieve it, but to still set the bar high and challenge myself. I would want the world to know that there are lots of small companies out there like mine, conducting ethical business to make a contribution to the world to better people’s lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am from New York originally, but now live in Dallas and I would not say Texas has as much excitement as New York, but I do have the “Texas Proud” attitude. Dallas is a great place to live, the economy is great, and the cost of living is hard to beat. The employment opportunities are 2nd to none here to achieve your professional goals. Most likely my friend and I would travel 3 hours to Austin and go to a Longhorn football game and then listen to live music on 6th Street. The man made rivers would be a great way to kick back and go tubing. After that, then we would head to Galveston and get on a 5 day cruise to Mexico and enjoy the sun, liquor, excursions, and all of the other entertainment provided.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father, Robert Rippner. He ran a company for many years and his leadership and ethics were qualities I wanted to emulate through my own business.
