We had the good fortune of connecting with Damita King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Damita, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
The most important thing as a parent I have done would be showing my children never to give up. I have instilled in my children that if you are determined and dedicated to something to always see it through to the end. I have also showed them that even if you have seen it through to the end and it did not come out the way you visioned it, you can either be unsatisfied with the outcome and settle or you can rise above and keep going until you reach the outcome you desire.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been an employee of the Dallas ISD food district for 29 years. I am most proud of my progression within the food service from starting as a dishwasher to now being a trainer. It was not easy working my way up but it was well worth it to show my children what hard work and dedication does. I overcame my challenges by focusing on my children and making sure I lead their lives by example. I learned along the way to always be yourself. Working in one place for this long I learned that some people will like you and some people wont but that none of it is really my business although I would prefer to be liked lol. What is important is making sure we all are doing our jobs to the best of our ability no matter if I am liked or not. I want people to know that my heart and love are genuine. That the love you feel while eating one of our baked goods is the same love I have in my heart. Each desert is fashioned after one or many people that I love unconditionally. As my niece has said, “These cookies are baked with butter and love”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friend to reunion tower so they can have a birds eye view of our beautiful city. For lunch I would take them to Terry Blacks BBQ because its texas and you have to get some good BBQ in. For just some hanging out fun I would take them to Cidercade because who does not like specialty cider and Old School arcade games? Depending on what time of year it is, The state fair of Texas is a definite must. I would also take them to one of the Skinny Cooks late night shows for some music and food. I would also take them to the boat rides on lake ray Hubbard or the Fort Worth stockyards.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother Justine. She always wanted a chef in the family and once she passed I was determined to make her dream a reality. I went to school , got my degree and then started my business with her face as the logo and inspiration. She was the one who gave me my love of cooking for others because growing up that is what she loved doing. There would be no Momma Jo’s without her.
