We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney S. Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courtney S., do you have a budget?
Yes, I do have a budget. My budget varies based on my income, my expenses, and my savings goals. So, for example, if I bring in $5,000 a month. My total monthly bills are $2,300 so I have $2,700 left to diversify my money. I have a savings goal of $12,000 at the end of 1 year so that’s $1,000 per month so now I have left $1,700. Keep in mind what’s left I can use for groceries, gas, emergencies like oil changes, or leisure spending. So that can bring it down to $1,000 give or take. Half of that can be put into an emergency savings account or an investment account. Or I can do $250 into the emergency savings account and $250 into the investment account. I still have $500 left after everything so I would let that sit in my checking account so when my direct deposit hits for the next pay period that $500 gets added so now in a sense I just added interest to my payouts. The key is to utilize your money. Do not spend all of it thus making you struggle and having to put things on your credit card because you can’t afford to pay for anything until your next paycheck. That creates bad money habits.

I treat my personal finances as if I am married to it. If you don’t respect your finances and are constantly disrespecting your finances, you will never be at peace with your finances. I look at my accounts every other day typically if I am spending frequently. Now if I haven’t been spending too much then I’ll look at my accounts weekly. One of the key things for me that helped me be financially successful was learning the importance of putting my bills on Autopay and setting up a Bills account. I know exactly where my money is going. I know exactly how much I will have left. I know exactly how my money is working for me and me not working for it. Having a peace of mind with money took time to establish because I had to learn on my own through personal experiences of being very broke multiple times and by continuing to educate myself. Once I figured out how to achieve financial peace, which was working with my money instead of against it, everything changed for me. Using money as tool to create more money and not using money to create more liabilities thus more expenses. By figuring out the money game I lowered my expenses from $2,100 to $370. Thus, creating a lot more positive outcomes with money because I became very confident and secure knowing that I mastered my finances.

I’m not really a spender when it comes to clothes and going out to restaurants. Most of my spending goes to investments knowing that I will get an ROI (return on investment), so it’s mainly been business programs, masterclasses, books, and business trips. My lifestyle is pretty simple as of right now because I’m still focused on improving my life, improving my business Living In Abundance Academy, being an author so writing more books, creating content for my YouTube channel @courtneysjenkins, and obtaining more income producing assets. Right now, I treat my lifestyle as a business, so I am very intentional about the things I do. I’m not out going to clubs, lounges, partying, drinking, etc. spending money carelessly. I have a vision and a goal for myself within the next two years that is going to change my life, my family’s life, and other people’s lives so I move with a purpose.

I am most proud of all the obstacles that I overcame and that I chose not to become a product of my environment. Knowing that generational wealth starts with me. I got to where I am today because one day, I decided that enough was enough. I wasn’t going to continue to blame others for my financial situation. I wasn’t going to continue to blame others for my failed relationships. I wasn’t going to continue to blame others for my one-sided friendships. I decided that everything was my fault and that no one was going to help me but myself, so I took control of my life. Thus, starting my personal development journey which created my business Living In Abundance Academy. It wasn’t easy at all. It’s still not easy and I don’t think it’ll ever be easy. I’m learning new things about myself and my business practically every day. I overcome challenges by reminding myself of the “WHY”. Why I started it, why it would be selfish of me to just quit, why I became an entrepreneur, why I moved to a different state, why I outgrew friendships and family members, and so on and so furth. I overcome challenges because I understand the bigger picture, I’m not afraid to take risks, I’m not afraid to have my back against the wall, that I have failed countless times. I’m not made for this lifestyle I’m built for it. I’ve learned a lot of lessons. I would say the most important lesson I learned is never afraid to fail because through all your failed moments are life lessons. You just must pay attention to what life is showing you. Then it’s up to you to create the life you want, the life you desire. The key is to feel fear but let it motivate you not defeat you. I want the world to know that anyone can achieve success. You don’t have to become a product of your environment. Understand what success looks like to you and what success means to you. Lastly, life is a journey and if you don’t push yourself hard enough to get what you want in life you’ll always remain and look back in disappointment. You never know how strong you are mentally until you push yourself, until you challenge yourself beyond your limits. Most people feel that they are doing their best when it’s not really their best. It’s just what they feel like doing. Instead do what is required of you, not what you feel like.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I am new to Dallas and haven’t really explored the city much I can only recommend visiting Legacy West for those who want to do some shopping and try some good restaurants.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I don’t want to mention any names but big shoutout to all my life coaches and real estate mentor especially my first personal development coach who told me repeatedly that he saw coaching in my future. Lastly, a big shoutout to my financial advisor for teaching me how to leverage credit.
