We had the good fortune of connecting with Clover Feld and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Clover, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always been a right brain creative since I was young. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be famous and I would do anything to achieve that goal. I made my way into the drag scene by seeing legends such as RuPaul, and Divine, be so free and authentic to themselves. I knew I was different, and being apart of the LGBT community really taught me that my art and love for performance could take me extremely far. I found such a joy in makeup artistry as well as performance that I knew drag could intertwine my two passions. I love making people laugh and have a good time, so doing drag allows me to express myself while still being able to put on a show and command an audience. I have never been a stranger to the spot light and I love that getting on stage always allows me feel the warmth of the audience even when I’m afraid. I am driven by the idea that there are no rules or boundaries to my art so I can express myself in anyway I feel suitable. The art form of drag is continually changing and evolving, meaning I will never be bored with what I do as a queen. I love the fact that I am taking on such a career because it make me feel whole as a creative and as queer person trying to spread a message of joy and happiness.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My drag is very unique to the person I am because I use it as a medium to display my culture, emotions, and experiences. I am proud of the following I am creating online as well as the impact I have on people I interact with now that I am stepping out in the Dallas Drag Scene. I have been able to develop my craft through hard work and of course the help of others around me. I have developed my make up skills from friends and colleagues always showing me new techniques until I discovered my own. My performance style comes from my experiences and others encouraging me to find a niche that works for me. Lastly my overall appearance and aesthetic comes from other queens in the scene, there are so many trade secrets to drag that I would have never known if it wasn’t for the kindness of others. Drag seems all glitz and glamour, which for the most part it is, but there are obstacles that I have had to overcome, many of which come from internalized self doubt. I found confidence in myself as a drag queen but constant comparison to others does eventually take a toll on you, I was able to overcome this by staying true to why I started drag, and reminding myself I am my only competition. I have learned that people are always looking for someone to guide them through life, and by doing drag I am using my voice to spread a positive message and help others get through their hardships. I want people to know that I may be a drag queen, but I am also a person who cares deeply about all the injustices going on in the world, and I want to be the ray of light we so desperately need in uncertain times.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am fairly new to Dallas myself, but I have discovered a few new spots that I find to be so much fun! My favorite spot in the entire DFW is Oaklawn aka the Gayberhood, a place full of amazing night life and fun, I have met so many amazing people while performing there as well as just going out with friends. I love to tour downtown Dallas and recently visited the Bishops Art District, which is full of great eats and boutiques to shop at. Outside of shopping and bar hopping I really love arcades, my friends and I go to Round 1 in the Grapevine Mills mall to play games, sing karaoke, bowl, and literally so much more! I have such a great time here because its huge and they have so many different activities.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am really inspired by the outrageous characters and personalities of the world, they have really molded me into the person I am today; however most of my success and character development is owed to my family. Each member of my immediate family has played a significant role in my life. I have drive and ambition thanks to my 3 sisters, I am caring and kind thanks to my parents and grandparents. Without their influence I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I consider myself to be one the luckiest queer people on earth because no matter what I want to do, I have an army of supporters behind me who are genuinely proud and happy for me. I take the experiences we have gone through together to better myself daily, and I can always lean on them through thick and thin. Outside of my family a huge influence for me is Nicki Minaj, she entered the world of rap being authentic to herself and paved an avenue of success for herself and many others to come. I love her quirky and outrageous style and confidence, it made realize I can be who ever I want to be, and through this I will find my tribe.
