We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Flaming and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my business with the idea of connecting people through desserts. I love how almost any event has dessert to share and make people smile! I named my bakery Sugar Social because I didn’t want to limit my menu to only one type of item, I wanted to make and teach people how to make desserts that bring people together.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The best part of my job is making people smile simply through providing delicious and custom desserts. I love the moment when someone tries something I’ve baked and can’t get enough! Sugar Social was started on the idea that dessert connects and brings people together. From weddings to birthdays, there is a dessert someone dreams about that I get the pleasure of making a reality! I think that’s pretty special. Owning a business is similar to tending a garden; you won’t see right away what it will grow into, but in time and lots of care, you will see something amazing come from it. I’ve really appreciated my journey in baking. I started working part time after school in a local bakery and after graduating, tried a few different environments like restaurants or hotels to get a feel of what baking meant and looked like to me. I like to offer anything baked that people want and try not to limit what I offer(within reason!). I also LOVE teaching people how to bake or decorate desserts, and look forward to doing so again once people feel safe to be around more people!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas is a great city for any type of person! There’s such a diverse offering of chill or interactive places to go. I personally enjoy going to different types of breweries or places you can sit and enjoy talking/snacking like Bowlounge on Irving Blvd. It’s a bowling alley and bar that lends itself to whatever mood you’re in. If you want something more involved, Bishop Cidercade is one of my favorite spots when I want to go out and have fun with friends. Incredible games and even better tasting cider made in house!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sugar Social wouldn’t be a reality without the support of my husband Jake, my family and friends for sharing about my desserts, and my awesome customers for telling their family/friends about me! I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today without all of the support!
