We had the good fortune of connecting with Cash Lawless and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cash, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Well it’s much different now than when I started my first company at 16. Back then, I passionately pursued what interested me with a lot of practice hours, and then people started to ask me to do that for them. This was creating videos back in 2003. That was a good way to approach business at that age.
When I was an adult, I would take a combination of what I found interesting, but added looking for unaddressed problems or methods of addressing problems in big TAMS (Total Addressable Markets) and in areas that serve core human needs. That is why I am in Real Estate, Manufacturing and beauty. I believe shelter is not going away anytime soon and for most people, they must have it. Peoples needs for physical goods are not going away soon. And peoples desire to look and feel good is not going away anytime soon. There are other reasons of course but those are industries I believe have good fundamentals.
In addition to that I would look for problems I am uniquely positioned to solve with my network, skills, aptitudes, and resources and that the prospect of solving energizes me. This is usually done by investing in other entrepreneurs now. I look for things that are easy for me to understand and build on-top of what I am already doing so they don’t become distractions. This is why I am not a tech investor. Yes, there are huge addressable markets with tech, but I don’t really understand tech all that well. I will leave that to the really smart people.
These days, I look for people, founders and investment opportunities in our industries of choice. That was a natural progression when you find you only have 24 hours in the day, and the only way to grow beyond that limit is other peoples, time, money, energy and resources.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I invest in real estate and businesses and share the profits with our investors.
What sets us apart is different for each company in the portfolio. Our parent company Hanover Sloan is a group of founders, helping founders. We aren’t making investments into companies we don’t bring over a decade of experience to already and because we have all been boots on the ground in these industries and still are, we are able to provide a degree of support to founders and returns for investors many can’t. So many worked on big teams, for big companies, but were never real decision makers, or actually got their hands dirty. That is not the case here and it sets us apart.
What I am proud of is the team we have built. Our manufacturing company TJ Brutal Customs is one of the worlds leading provider of unconventional aftermarket motorcycle parts focusing primarily on Honda’s and Harleys sold in 33 countries. One of our real estate companies Big Iron Capital, invests in Texas real estate focusing on a specific asset class in the DFW metroplex that we have extensive experience in. Home Theory
We got here by making a lot of mistakes and fixing them really fast. We are always observing, testing and trying. And I think that gives us a unique advantage.
Hanover Sloan exists to make the world a better place by creating for profit business, that serve peoples needs and finding and supporting the entrepreneurs who want to do the same.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Fort Worth Stock Yards, the Rodeo, The Drover for dinner. You can find me down there often. Week long here in Texas, Palo Duro Canyon area. Would go camping and horseback riding and we’d bring our own drinks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Coco. She is my reason. She became the dominant driving force to pursue growth the moment I met her and she still is. She is my big why. But of course there are many other people who have helped along the way. If I start naming others, I would make the big mistake of forgetting someone very important. They know who they are.
