We had the good fortune of connecting with Carter Sutton, Ocean Kafle, Matt Starr Included above and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carter, Ocean, and Matt, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We decided to start our non-profit organization/club out of our interest for environmental science and care for the environment. Being able to get our hands dirty with something we care about is what drives us. Sustainability in many different environmental spheres is a huge issue at the moment, and is something thats commonly overlooked. Brining awareness to the issue and encouraging others to get involved in fighting the impending crisis of our changing environment is the only way to truly strike change. We love being able to watch people’s thought process transform as they work towards more sustainable practices and help us achieve sustainability in our community one project at a time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One thing that sets Alliance for Sustainability apart is its inclusion of everyone and sense of community. No matter what background you come from, we are all working towards a common goal. Recently, our main project has been the restoration of local parks. On weekends, all of our members come together to help clean up trash, get rid of weeds, and plant flowers at local parks. Not only do member’s get a chance to volunteer their time to the environment, but also meet new people. I think that’s what AFS is all about: getting to meet people who care about about the same thing as you, and forming connections with those people.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting for the day, I’d have to take them to downtown dallas for the day. For breakfast, Ellen’s is a must! It’s an amazing mom and pop breakfast cafe, with probably the best pancakes in the world. Next, we would go to Main Street Garden Park and go for a walk. The park is beautiful and it’s always fun getting to people watch and experience Dallas. Before lunch, we’d have to stop by the Dallas Museum of Art of course because what’s a day in dallas without looking at art? For lunch, we would go to the Truck Yard and try different things from the food trucks. The rest of the day we would walk around and shop, taking in all the amazing stores Dallas has to offer. For dinner, we’d go to the Zodiac Room, one of the coolest spots in dallas in my opinion. Not many people know about it, but the food and service is amazing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One person who inspired us to create our organization is Rachel Duffy, who was our AP Environmental Science teacher. Through her teaching and mentorship we found our passion for the environment. She is always there to support us and answer any questions we have. She is an amazing example of what it means to be sustainable.
