We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caroline, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, I never thought that starting my own business would be something I would do. My mom and I have always baked, and friends have always told us “You should open a bakery!” I would always kind of brush it off like “no, I don’t think we are good enough for that” or “it’s just a hobby.” I am a full-time student, so I didn’t think that was even a possibility. During covid, my mom taught me how to decorate cookies and we’ve grown so much since then. We would do a lot of it for fun, adding them to parties we hosted or for family and friends. Some friends had asked us to make cookies for a birthday party and graduations. I think that was when we decided we could get good at this and could sell them. We focus on quality to make customers happy and hopefully exceed expectations in everything that matters; taste, design, freshness, and customer service. I am always doing something as I am a college student, a coach, and a cookier! I will be attending graduate school next year, so that was something I needed to consider when starting PC Cookery! Fast forward to 2023, we were getting a lot more orders doing birthdays, graduations, and corporate orders. I think that was when we had that “okay, we can make this a business” moment.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We create custom decorated sugar cookies with the goal of exceeding our customer’s expectations in taste, design, and freshness. We enjoy taking someone’s dreams and turning them into something truly memorable! My mom and I have baked together ever since I was a child, and I have learned everything from her. It made sense to turn our love of baking into a company. It is something we enjoy doing together. We never intended for our hobby to become a business. I work a part-time job and attend school full-time, while my mom has a full-time job. Originally, when I was away at college, my mom took a class and started giving me cookies. She showed me how to decorate the cookies when I returned home in 2020, and the rest is history! I graduated with my bachelor’s degree this past December and will be attending graduate school next year. Creating a work life balance has been a difficult challenge. I try to tackle as much as I can, and sometimes I say yes to too many things, so learning it is okay to say no to things has been a struggle for me! I am continuing to learn and grow with PC Cookery and I am excited for the future of PC Cookery!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some favorite places to eat: El Norte, Pie tap
Places to visit: Dallas sports games (especially Dallas Stars hockey!), Fort Worth stockyards, downtown Mckinne
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am without my parents. My mom taught me everything I know about baking. She is just as important in this business whether it’s helping plan a cookie set, creating the perfect color palette, or helping decorate! My dad helps us by giving us a second opinion when we need it, help package cookies, and doing dishes. I owe all of my success to them and am nothing but grateful for everything they have done and continue to do for me
