We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, how do you think about risk?
Bigger the risk the bigger the reward. We have taken some heavy losses and some large gains because of risk. I personally process risk by a number of factors. Will there be underground piping I am unaware of? Sometimes the soil I’m digging on is clay and I can barely dig 1 foot down. I literally just got done dealing with a home that had almost a solid layer of concrete, it felt like, while digging a French drain. That costs me more time and more money. Risk is speculative, just don’t be afraid of it or you literally cant grow.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been doing landscaping for about 8 years now and professionally this is my second year. They say this is the year where you figure everything out and then next year turn a real profit haha. To get where I am today, personal relationships and client referrals have boosted my growth. Definitely has not been easy but failure hasn’t stopped me in the past. You never know what you are really getting into no matter how much research you do, so just be prepared for the unexpected. In the future I want to set myself apart by providing good healthcare for my employees because landscapers hardly get paid well as an employee let alone good insurance. Other things like good pay, reasonable time off etc. but that’s all in the future!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First and foremost, we are starting at Snooze an AM Eatery. If you want some gas breakfast and mimosas, that is where I would take anyone. Even myself if I just want to have a great morning. Then head over to Martin House Brewing in Fort Worth for the best craft beer my tastes buds have tasted in a long time. After that probably hit up the Kimball Museum or the Stockyards and because I grew up around the stockyards you know we have to get western dressed! I love the botanical gardens or the Dallas arboretum for a nice relaxing day and maybe a nice picnic as well. Anything outdoors I love. Oh and if we have time, head over to mineral wells and do a little rock climbing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Kelsey. Kelsey, Kelsey, Kelsey. Her thought process is insane and I have learned so much just from how she plans things out. I tell her all the time she is my creative director but she just thinks she’s being supportive. My previous business partner Juan Luna has been an amazing help as well. Hardest worker in construction I know and he has helped me get through a couple large jobs now in half the time it usually takes.
