We had the good fortune of connecting with Callie Twisselman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Callie, how do you think about risk?
I think taking risks is an essential part of living life to its fullest. If you don’t take risks you’ll just stay the same and never grow. No risk no reward. I have to take alot of risk with my chosen career path. Moving 2,000 miles away from home to chase my dreams of being a singer/songwriter was the scariest decision I’ve ever made. But I’m so glad I did because now I’m living out some of my wildest dreams.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Country music singer/ songwriter currently living in Nashville, Tn but I’m from the central coast of California. I grew up on a grain and cattle ranch where my hobbies mostly consisted of riding horses and competing in rodeos. But my mother was a local country singer and had a band who’d played around our small town so I think that’s where my love of singing began. I started singing the national anthem at 10 years old wherever I could, rodeos, sporting events, graduations…. I was hooked. I then decided at 15 I needed to sing my own songs so I picked up my mom’s old guitar and that’s where my love of songwriting began. I formed a band right out of high school and toured CA for a few years but that just didn’t feel like enough for me. Everyone was always telling me I needed to move to Nashville but I just didn’t want to leave my family and home. I was also married at a young age to my high school sweet heart which also didn’t help in my wanting to move. Unfortunately that marriage didn’t last. So that’s when I realized I needed to just go for it and really chase my dreams. In 2017 I made the move to Nashville, Tn 2,000 miles away from home. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done but I fell in love with the city as soon as I got there. It hasn’t been an easy ride and was definitely hard finding people I could trust and work with especially with the whole town chasing the same dream. Luckily my then producer, Kent Wells introduced me to my now manager Danny Nozell ( Dolly Partons manager) and he has really taught me the industry and helped me reach goals I never thought I could! I got my first publishing deal for songwriting a year and a half in of living in Nashville and that was a dream come true in itself. I also released my debut EP “Closure” and toured 19 states and even went overseas! It has been a wild fun ride so far but I am really just getting started! So much is in store for 2024 I can’t wait for the world to hear my new music and see what is coming next!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit the city I would of course have a downtown broadway bar hopping night in Nashville. Thats a given. Probably go to Printers alley where they have some less touristy bars. Alley taps and bourbon street blues bar are some of my favs. Of course we’d have to get a daddy dogs hot dog ,they are the best!! Especially when you’ve had some to drink haha. Then have a night of listening to songwriters at the listening room. That is also one of my favorite less noisy places to catch live music, but also hear the stories behind some of nashvilles biggest hit songs.
The Opry would also be another night of a live music must. Along with checking out the Gaylord Opryland resort nearby and maybe getting dinner there, it’s beautiful!
Nashville also has some of the most gorgeous hiking trails. So we’d probably get a little workout in one morning hiking Percy Warner park. Then do a little shopping at some of my favorite boutiques, vici and blush to name a couple. And of course everyone has to try hot chicken when you visit Nashville, so we’d go to my favorite Hattie B’s hot chicken
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am at without the love and support of my parents. My dad has always taught me to follow my dreams and has stuck by me through all these years. And my mother, who is one of my biggest cheerleaders and also was a singer, I’d say played a big role in my love of singing.
One other person who has helped me get to where I am is my manager Danny Nozell. He has never given up on me and has guided me and taught me so much about the music business.
