We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Griffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I had two extremely creative parents neither having a corporate job. My mom was a hairstylist and my dad a professional cartoonist, so you could say creativity was in my blood. Even at a young age, my parents always encouraged me to be creative and to think outside of the box. I always knew I wanted to do something where I could bring all my creativity into play, I just didn’t know what that was or how I would get there. I did the whole college thing and found the corporate job like I thought I was supposed to, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t bringing me the joy I was expecting. It finally occurred to me that, although my artistic ability looked different than my parents, it was there, and it needed to be utilized. Being creative and free is what makes me happy. It drives me.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I like to think what sets me apart from others is my boldness. From my cookie flavors to my colors, I am nothing short of bright and bold. I love anything loud, anything sparkly. The brighter the better. I want people to see my cookies and smile because the colors and designs just make them so happy. Some people are scared of being loud where here, I am jumping in headfirst.
Right now, what I am most excited about is rebranding my business. I am currently in the middle of refocusing everything from my business name to my packaging. Seeing as I am a sucker for all things bright and cheerful, why not rebrand my business to align with that. I want someone to see my name and instantly feel joy and excitement just because they know with it comes a bit of a party. I know the trend can be more neutral and monotone, but that’s not for me. Give me all the sparkle and sprinkles!
What is funny is, unlike most people in the industry, I have not been baking for a long time. I picked this up around 2019 when I went to a cookie class that my wedding photographer was hosting. I tried it out and was hooked! I immediately went home and started creating my own recipes and designs. My brain was going wild with ideas. Shortly after this I began to get orders from family members. At the time, it was just a side hustle because I was working a full-time job. It quickly went from family members to friends to people who were recommended by others. As the orders continued to come in, I started thinking to myself maybe this could be something bigger, but I was too scared to take the leap.
Sadly, I wore myself out pretty quickly trying to keep up with all the orders, as well as working my full-time job. I was working crazy hours once I got home, and it started to take the joy out of it, so I stopped baking at that time.. I knew I wanted to do something bigger with it one day, but I just didn’t know how I would get there.
Fast forward to summer of 2020, when I was 7 months pregnant with my first born and working at home due to COVID lockdowns, I started reflecting on what I wanted my future work to look like. With COVID changing the workplace at that time, I knew I wanted to do something that allowed me to continue to stay at home or at least create my own hours in order to be with my daughter as much as possible. Cookies popped back in my head! I knew maternity leave was coming up, so I said what the heck and put some feelers out that I was going to be making cookies again. There was no better time than right then to take the leap of faith. The rest is history!
I want the world to know that it is okay to fail over and over again as long as you continue to try. If you have passion behind what you are doing, do not give up. It is okay to take a break. It is okay to take time to figure things out. It is okay to change during the process. It is okay to completely reinvent yourself time and time again until it is just right, but never give up. There is no limit on how many times you can try something. I have tried and failed more than I want to admit but the win is worth the losses. Don’t forget for every success story someone has they probably have about 10 failures to help them along the way. Owning a business is a journey and everyone has a different way of getting there. Be open to the process and never stop learning.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie was headed in town for the week my first stop on the way home from the airport would be Mi Cocina. This place is my jam, and they have the best mambo taxis. I love sports so I am definitely taking her to any sporting event. Right now, with baseball about to start, we are headed to Texas Live! And then to the new ballpark. She of course has to enjoy a nice dinner, so we are headed to The Henry in Uptown for some fun drinks and an overall chill vibe. But we all know before she leaves we are 100% headed through the Whataburger drive-thru to load up on fries and taquitos.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my family and friends. They are the reason I worked up the courage to launch my own business. I started this journey by just making cookies for family functions and friend’s birthdays. They always told me I could make something out of my side hobby, but I blew it off for a few years. Finally, I took the plunge, and boy were they right. My family members are the ultimate taste testers and of course my friends help me stay on trend. I couldn’t do it without the constant encouragement and push from each one of them. Now don’t think it is all sunshine and rainbows though, they give me their brutally honest truth on everything, which I love because to me the best support is genuine support. I couldn’t be what I am today or go where I am headed without them. They know who they are!
