We had the good fortune of connecting with brisayon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi brisayon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Hey!! I’m a streetwear fashion designer from maryland! I touched a sewing machine for the first time back in 2017, but I’ve always had a passion for clothing and styling myself and others. In 2015, my friend told me about how easy it was to alter clothing with a sewing machine, so I figured I’d get one myself and do the same. Being a broke college student, I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas, and eventually got one in 2016 after my family refused to buy one for me in 2015! Once I started altering clothing, I decided that I wanted to start making my own garments, and haven’t stopped since. It only felt right to pursue fashion fully because being behind a sewing machine is where I found total peace and solace.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I specialize in streetwear fashion! I know that’s a major generalization, so a more specific realm that I focus on is functional fashion! A lot of the clothing I make can transform to look multiple ways, which can in turn also serve multiple purposes. I take pride in showing the world a lot of concepts that haven’t been seen or thought of before. I’m on the rise in the fashion world, but I’m still not anywhere close to where I’d like to be, personally. Trying to succeed being self-taught, in a dog eat dog world, with no connections isn’t the easiest thing to deal with, but I stay focused on the end goal, and confident in the reason I wake up every morning!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from a small city in maryland with absolutely nothing to do lol but I’m about 40min away from Washington DC so I’d love to talk about that place! DC is known for its museums, there’s literally so many beautiful and informative places to check out, that can match any vibe you like! If you want a classic, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is probably the most popular because it touches on an array of historical times and finds ways to make it all interesting! Then there’s art museums like Hirshhorn that actually update their art so you can visit multiple times and get a new experience each time you go. DC is a melting pot for worldwide cultures, and more importantly, food! You can get all different types of cuisines in DC because being that it’s the nations capital, they cater to places all around the world since we’re constantly being visited from people from all around the world.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mother and father first off for birthing me, because without them I wouldn’t have popped up in ‘92! They weren’t believers at first in my vision but seeing first hand what I’ve been able to create has gained their support 100%.

I wouldn’t be anywhere without the support of my sisters as well, two women that buy my clothing and bought my first sewing machine.

Wouldn’t be where I am now without my loving girlfriend that pushes me everyday to be persistent with this passion of mine. She’s seen a lot of L’s that I’ve taken, and helps me get through the mental burdens.

Lastly shoutout to all of my friends and supporters!! Without them, I wouldn’t be able to spread love and happiness through my clothing.
