We had the good fortune of connecting with Brigette Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brigette, what is the most important factor behind your success?
A big factor behind my success as an artist has been prioritizing a journey of self-love and focusing on my mental health. I’ve incorporated con amor (Spanish for with love) into the name because everything I create stems from my heart. I always think, “will this bring one person joy?” And even if that someone is just me or maybe just my inner child, I’m happy! It’s all about the love I pour into my art that has become an important piece to my brand.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Corner to corner, I love to fill the space with color. I’m most proud of my ability to keep on, despite the feeling of not belonging. I’ve made a great big mural that represents the culture of my people, right in the heart of Bishop Arts. I’ve made my family and community proud, and that’s something I carry with me. To get to where I am took a lot of self reflection, trial and error, and ultimately, the support and praise I’ve been given. I’ve overcome challenges by believing in my abilities, as cliche as it may sound. I want the world to know that they don’t have to be afraid to be “cringe,” but to just be themselves. Learning to check in with yourself as your pursuing your passion is the most important thing you can do. I’ve been through dark times, but I’ve been through even more brighter times because of my love for what I do. Don’t let go of that passion, hold on for dear life, and you will see results. That’s the brand I want to promote: love. Love in what you do, love in yourself and love in what you give.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The most exciting place to stop and see when visiting Dallas is Bishop Arts! The fun art you will see, the live music you will hear, the amazing food — it’s all a representation of who Dallas is. You can make your way to The Trove for a fun drink, maybe start your day for a fun breakfast at OddFellows, maybe a nice dinner at VeraCruz cafe, or even stop and shop on the Main Street of Bishop Arts — it’s all there. The music and people will make you feel the true side of Dallas. From day time activities to night life, it’s the best place to take someone who’s visiting Dallas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people that deserve a shoutout. My family and friends that continue to share and repost my work. Strangers that take pictures with my mural and follow me. And of course, a special shout-out goes to the small business owners of Bishop Arts that have hired me to paint their walls! They believe in me and trust me with such wonderful projects, and I am forever grateful. As an Oak Cliff native, it fills me with utter joy to know I’ve added color to the Bishop Arts community. My parents can point at the murals I’ve done and say, “my daughter did that,” and that in itself fills me with pride.
