We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Matos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
After Melinda moved to United States from Australia 6 years ago, we decided to grow our joint passion and experience of fitness into a business. At this time I had currently been a Police Officer for just under 20 years. We noticed that police officers along with other first responders were lacking in their fitness, health and well-being. Law Enforcement on an average are in the top five as most unfit professions. We also saw the need to provide firearms and tactics training for Law Enforcement and civilians. Together we decided that we would focus our business around training police officers.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Quick synopsis on my background. -United States Marines,
-Government Security Contractor (U.S. Department of State)
-21 years Law Enforcement (7 yrs Narcotics, 18 yrs SWAT) – Retired
We specialize in fitness, firearms and tactics training for Law Enforcement and civilians. We train police officers, police recruits, SWAT Officers, armed security and civilians. There is a lack of training in law enforcement and we wanted to be part of the change that improves Law Enforcement. I was planning on retiring around the 23 year mark, but things happened sooner (not a bad problem to have). Business began to get busier and we realized that I needed more hours in the day to grind. The decision was made to retire from active Law Enforcement and focus all of my time on our business. This was not and easy choice to make and it was an extremely scary decision to make as well. From a secure job for the the last 21 years with a secure pay check and health insurance to the unknown. God has always been on our side so instead of looking at it in a scary way, I decided to look at it as an exciting new move to continue to do what I enjoy and to spread my knowledge to others. If you don’t take chances and always stay in your comfort zone then what is the point. How do we get better? I always tell people they have to learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Business was going to thrive and that was our only option. There was no what if this or that. There was no Plan B. There was just what we set our minds to do and that was it. During this time is when Covid times began and that was challenging, but we managed because that is what we do. Where there is a will there is always a way. We worked through part of this by doing our group classes online along with some of out personal training clients for a bit until we were able to get back to doing outdoor bootcamps. There have been many ups and downs and there will continue to be ups and downs. We just welcome those times because there is always something to learn from it that will make us better.
We are very passionate about what we do and we take what we do extremely serious because life or death are sometimes the options. We have to make sure the people we train are prepared mentally and physically because their lives depends on it and there are people that depend on them. We don’t like to treat people like numbers and that is why we are extremely personable with people. I think that is one thing that our client love about us. There are many businesses that just go through people because their number 1 priority is money. Money is great but our number 1 priority is our clients and the quality of training they receive from us. With us quality always wins. Whether it is training, calling/texting/emailing clients to check on them or customer service with our online shop or just answering messages from people inquiring about what we do. Attention to detail is extremely important to us and we make sure we give that to our clients. We are known for honesty and a No BS attitude and that is what people like. They want the truth so we give it to them. If we fluff things up for people it will not help them so we are extremely honest with people. We strive to be better than we were yesterday and we will continue to improve what we do and how we do it every single day.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) area there are many things to do. We enjoy staying active so we would obviously have some of the following: -Workouts (Our Bootcamp)
-Range time (firearms)
-Hiking
-most of the food we would cook at home
-Thai restaurant
-Botanical/Japanese Gardens
-Hang out at home since it’s pretty quiet and relaxing
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Shoutout is to my wife, Melinda. Melinda’s training background began in Australia in the Land Down Under. She has prior experience in cycling, bodybuilding, strength training and job/sport specific training. Melinda is a Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Bookkeeper. She has also trained police recruits at a police academy. She has a full schedule of personal training clients, that include Police Officers from many agencies in the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) area to everyday people wanting to better their health. Without her, what we do would be extremely difficult. She is the backbone to our business. She trains, she mentors, she is the bookkeeper, she is the tax person, she is the payment person, she coordinates team runs / obstacle course races and helps as the social media person. She amazes me everyday. Melinda helps and encourages me in everything I do and helps me be a better person every single day. She is definitely an angel in disguise. I am a lucky king to have such a wonderful woman to call my queen.
