We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Boone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always loved a lot of things and BOONE SKIN is my third entrepreneurial venture I started. I always loved skincare – being experimental with it on my own skin and educating myself with formulas, branding, and being part of the inclusive and sustainability discussion that I knew whatever I created – I wanted a voice in.

When you’re not a big brand yet or don’t have a big budget, starting out can be difficult. Starting off, the research in finding a lab that was able to produce the products we want with the quantities we needed was not easy. We’re thankful after months of research to have found a lab and be able to create the brand and tell the story we wanted to tell in skincare.

I wanted to be the brand that had no limitations – that’s why we are gender-neutral focused. I wanted consumers to pick up the product and know that it didn’t have a “for men” or “for women” label. We tell that story in our ad campaigns – featuring people of all colors, backgrounds, skin types, genders, sizes, and personalities. The inclusivity is what drives our brands and is part of our core values and mission statement. The sustainability aspect of our brand comes from my personal belief that I think we all need to be more cautious and educated more on – we strive to be 100% sustainable by working with manufacturers that are able to create our brand packaging from post consumer waste and have the environment in mind.

What should our readers know about your business?
Boone Skin is a gender neutral premium skincare line. Our focus is high quality ingredients that are cruelty free and formulated without parabens, sulfates, or gluten. Being gender-neutral focused, we are proud of our campaigns that features people of all skin colors and skin types. We truly believe that coming together will help us live in a better world, despite how dark it can be sometimes.

We are a direct-to-consumer brand and aspire to be in select local retail space as we continue to grow. We launched during the pandemic and couldn’t be more happier with the new customers and attention it has already gotten. For the months of November, December, and January of last year; we were featured in Vanity Fair UK beauty advertorials and have gotten international recognition and customers from it.

There will be weeks that you have sales and weeks where you wont have any. I think the most important part is to continue to keep pushing and sharing your content. Working on building your infrastructure and branding is just as important as getting sales. The results will come and know that being patient is part of the entrepreneurial journey. The lesson to learn starting any brand is perseverance and being able to be adaptable when good and bad things come.

As we continue to grow and build, we see ourselves with an online community that embraces each others differences and share the love for the brand and skincare in general. Featuring men and women together in a beauty campaign is nothing new, but we don’t see enough of it. We have brought people from the LGBTQIA+ community to work with us and will continue to work to see more inclusion and diversity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I always say when you look good, you feel good. I’d start out with a day shopping at NorthPark Center – known to have a mix of accessible and luxury fashion – a good start to a good time is a good outfit.

I’m a person that can do fine dining and also be fine with a hole in the wall food joint. Food is always the most enjoyable shared with someone with good energy. For fine dining, Nobu is always light and easy. Shell Shack is nice for casualness and fun.

Hangout spots include Hotel Bars like the Crescent, Crowdus Bar in Deep Ellum, or our very own Gayborhood on Oak Lawn.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout those who I worked alongside professionally in helping make my vision come to life: Jamie House (Photographer) Viri (Hair/makeup), Charles Smith II (Creative Director) and Alenica Lewis (Model).

Close friends that have encourage and supported me: Tracy, Angel, Erika, and Salomon to name a few.

My partner: Johnny Flores of Del Carmen Skin, who also has his own spa in DFW.

Momma Sandra, she has always believed in me and my dreams. She has always encouraged me and guided me spiritually.

My father who has taught me work ethic and to always keep working hard to create the life I want to live.
