We had the good fortune of connecting with Bradley Steele Harding and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bradley Steele, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I created my own production company because I wanted to create films/videos that spoke to me personally. Movie production is essentially a collaborative medium that brings a lot of disparate people and elements together for a very brief period of time. This can often lead to a compromised end result – which most people in the industry will tell you is simply the nature of the business. Very early on in my production career I knew that if I was going to continue I would have to be focusing on projects where I was steering the creative process. I created Lampkin Lane Productions so that I could write and direct my own films without a lot of interference from producers/distributors who might compromise the finished product.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since I was a kid I have loved telling stories – and film was always the most compelling way for me to tell them. I was always drawn to the horror genre, which I found exciting and cathartic and a unique way to explore the human condition. I think that the horror films that I have produced are more grounded and relatable than the the modern examples you find on streaming platforms. I am very proud of the layered script that I wrote for my feature 13 TRACKS TO FRIGHTEN AGATHA BLACK and think, even with its very low budget, it stands apart from similar micro-budget titles. I am still evolving as a filmmaker (which has been a part-time gig until recently). The road to finishing the film was a long one, with several technical challenges on the postproduction end that were difficult and time-consuming. But I am a much stronger filmmaker – and person – because of the journey. I think the ultimate takeaway is that I am much more confident in my abilities and have, just recently, started to identify myself as a “real filmmaker.” Up until a few years ago I only identified as a writer because that is how I made my living. I am hopeful that my feature film might help change that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Most of my friends love film, so I would take them to my favorite theater in Dallas – the historic Texas Theater on Jefferson. Before the show (which would hopefully be a smart repertory horror classic) I would take them to my favorite Tex Mex restaurant Ganzalez which is just down the street. I would take them to 14 Records on Garland Rd. to chat with iconic music guru (and store owner) Bucks Burnett and shop for some classic vinyl. Depending on the friend, I might take them to Cedar Springs for some dancing at The Round Up and Sue Ellen’s – maybe end up on the patio on J.R.’s for a night cap. I live in the greatest neighborhood in Dallas, Lakewood, so I would make sure we visited White Rock Lake and my favorite restaurant The Heights for a groovy New York dining/drinking experience. If I was feeling adventurous, I might take them to Deep Ellum for my favorite fried chicken at Pecan Lodge (which I hear also has good barbecue).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have an amazing husband/partner who has been extremely supportive of all my creative endeavors. It doesn’t hurt that he is also an incredible artist who is just as passionate as I am about design and storytelling. When I shot my first feature film, he not only created a lot of the artwork seen in the film – he jumped in and catered the set during filming as well.
