We had the good fortune of connecting with Brad Springs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brad, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Opening a live music venue is a pretty big gamble, especially a live music venue that features only original music. Will the fans show up to see the bands in large enough numbers to keep the doors open is a pretty big risk. Some days are winners some days not so much. Without the risk the reward just isn’t nearly as sweet on those days that wind up winning days. 2020 and Covid has made it even more so between the shut downs, the fear of going out and actually catching a live music performance. Been a rough year but when you are all in there’s nothing you can do but move forward.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Six Springs Tavern is a live music venue in Richardson, Texas that just celebrated our 3rd year anniversary. Our focus is and always has been in supporting musicians and bands that perform their own original material. It has always been our #1 priority to make the musician to fan experience a memorable experience for the audience and the performers on our stage. We have had Grammy winning and nominated artists on our stage, artists that have Billboard charting records, songs on Gold and Platinum record releases. Past contestants from American Idol and The Voice have also graced us with performances on our stage. An all original format has not always been the easiest road to travel, it is a struggle for any musician to have their original songs heard and build a fan base. As a venue that translates over as well in some instances in attendance numbers but we have continued to stick to our mission of exposing music lovers to music that may not be getting radio play or that they may have never heard before. That’s one of the most rewarding aspects, actually seeing someone discover new music or a new artist and then see them every time that artist performs on future dates. Seeing the attendance numbers grow. Seeing fans buy records at the show. Is it always easy, absolutely not. It’s a struggle for the musicians, it’s a struggle for the venue but all you can do is keep fighting the good fight for the sake of the music.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Obviously I would be biased toward my own venue, we have a full kitchen and serve great food, have amazing staff, great musicians performing on our stage and wonderful patrons. As an obvious music fan we do get out and support musicians playing in other venues. Sundown At The Granada and The Truck Yard on Lower Greenville are some favorite spots to grab a bite and a drink and hear som tunes. The Rustic on N. Central Expressway, The Kessler Theatre in South Dallas are both great places to catch live music as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
An extra special shout out to all the hard working musicians of the world creating the soundtracks to our collective lives and bringing us together through the universal vibration; of music. Especially given the unprecedented year that 2020 has been. It’s been a struggle for us all just getting by but to continue to create art and provide a boost to our spirits as listeners and fans is really a monumental accomplishment.
