Meet Bikash Kandel | Owner of The Gurkha Bar & Grill, and Respiratory Therapist


We had the good fortune of connecting with Bikash Kandel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bikash, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Inspired by a lifelong dream, I saw an opportunity to turn my love for cooking into this small, thriving business. When I decided to bring my culinary dream into life five years ago, I recognized a need for Indo-Pak cuisine in the DFW area, which led me to embark on this journey of entrepreneurship. With my international culinary degree obtained from Australia, I aimed to introduce a unique blend of flavors in the form of an Indian-Nepali restaurant.
 
 
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our establishment was born out of a passion for culinary excellence and a commitment to creating a unique dining experience when there was not much to offer in the DFW area.
What sets us apart from others in the industry is our dedication to quality and innovation. We take pride in sourcing the freshest and finest ingredients to create dishes that not only satisfy the taste buds but also tell a story of flavors. Our menu is a fusion of traditional and contemporary Nepali and Indian food, providing our customers with a diverse and exciting dining experience.
The road to where we are today was not without its challenges. The restaurant industry is known for its competitiveness and ever-changing landscape. We faced difficulties in the initial stages, from attracting a loyal customer base to navigating through economic fluctuations as well as going through a pandemic for almost two years. However, we overcame these challenges through resilience, adaptability, and a constant commitment to improvement.
One of the key lessons learned along the way is the importance of customer feedback. We actively listen to our patrons, understanding their preferences, and incorporating constructive criticism to enhance our offerings. This customer-centric approach has not only helped us build a loyal following but has also allowed us to refine our menu and service continually.
Another crucial aspect of our success has been the strong team we’ve built. The dedication and hard work of our staff have been instrumental in creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Teamwork, communication, and a shared passion for hospitality have been the driving forces behind our achievements.
As for what we want the world to know about us, it’s that we are not just a restaurant; we are a culinary destination where every meal is crafted with care and creativity. We want our brand to be synonymous with exceptional dining experiences, a place where people come not just for the food but for the memories created around the table.
In essence, our journey as a restaurant owner has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. The key is to stay true to our vision, adapt to changes, and always strive for excellence. We look forward to the years ahead, continuing to innovate, delight our customers, and contribute to the vibrant culinary landscape in our community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start off with taking my best friend to a renowned steakhouse in the DFW area. Dallas Museum of Art would be another place I would be taking him/her. Fort Worth Botanic Garden being another one of them. And ofcourse, I would take him/her on a tour to the AT&T stadium, which is a home of the Dallas Cowboys. Wine Testing to a local vineyard is on another one of my lists.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am truly grateful for the success of our restaurant, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible dedication, collective effort, and hard work of both my family members and my amazing team of employees. My family has been the backbone of support, providing unwavering encouragement during the ups and downs of this journey. And our employees have been the heart and soul of this establishment, always delivering exceptional service and contributing their talents. To each and every one of them, I extend my deepest appreciation for their roles in making this business a success.
