We had the good fortune of connecting with Becca Cardon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Becca, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to be a mother. I graduated college in 2019 and then started a family with my husband. As a new mother, I realized how much sacrifice went into caring for another little human 24/7. I then had my second son in 2021 and felt that I was drowning in motherhood. I needed something for myself, something that I could do for me, besides being a mom. I have always loved pregnancy and childbirth, and after a traumatic birth experience with my second, I decided I wanted to educate other women and be involved in birth. Once I learned what a doula was, I was sold. It was the perfect career for me that allowed me to educate and support women during pregnancy and birth, while also being home with my young boys.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Childbirth Doula. I provide educational, physical, and emotional support to women and their families during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. When my second son was born, I had a traumatic birth experience because of a variety of different reasons. First, I didn’t have a supportive care provider. The care I received was routine, quick, and insensitive. Second, I was uneducated on what my options were during birth. This in turn led to a cascade of interventions that I was not prepared for. This led me to the desire and passion that I have to make sure all women know their options and are educated when it comes to childbirth.
Pregnancy and childbirth is such a special and exciting time for expectant mothers and families. However, over time society has made childbirth out to be a scary and painful medical event through the media and horror stories. While there are emergencies and medical conditions that arise during pregnancy and childbirth at times, most of the time it is a natural event that women were made to go through. It does not need to be a scary experience and every woman has the right to feel empowered and in control throughout her entire pregnancy and childbirth. This empowerment and control comes through education and a support team who believes in them, which is my job as their doula. I meet with women twice during pregnancy to educate them on all their options so they can make informed decisions, support those decisions during labor, and provide physical support to help them cope with contractions and have a successful birth experience.
One thing I love about being a doula is educating women and families, and then seeing them tap into their strength and power to achieve the birth they want. Childbirth is unpredictable, but when situations arise and the woman knows her options and knows what is happening, then no matter what the birth story is, it will be successful.
My business is “Your Beautiful Birth”. I chose this name for my business because while birth is messy, hard, painful, and unknown, it is also beautiful. And you can have a beautiful birth with the proper education and support.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I would first take them to Buccee’s, to experience the coolest gas station they will ever see. I would also take them to Cane Rosso, Hard Eight BBQ, Hutchin’s BBQ, Lupe Tortilla and Torchy’s Tacos. Those are some of my favorite places to eat here in DFW.
Some things that I think are really fun to do here are boating at Grapevine Lake, Grapevine Main Street, a game at American Airlines Center, Dallas Zoo, and Klyde Warren Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shoutout to a few people. First, my husband and kids for supporting me in this dream of mine. It isnt always easy, but they have supported me and allowed me to do something that I love. I would also like to give a shoutout to Birth Boot Camp, which is the company I certified through. They have provided me with a lot of useful information that has allowed me to better support my clients. Third, I would like to give a shoutout to the Birth Boot Camp community and friends I have made that have been nothing but supportive and encouraging as I have learned and as I continue to learn and grow.
