We had the good fortune of connecting with Barrington Hinds and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barrington, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As I’ve gotten older I’ve come to realize that it’s the time spent with people that I love and care for that takes priority over everything. Realistically I do have to dedicate a great amount of time to my career, but I know longer operate from a place of fear. I know that staying proactive is key and keeping a healthy mind body and soul is the most important of all.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional Dancer. I have been dancing since I was a kid. I like to say that dance found me. I had no idea of what it was to be a dancer let alone make it a career. Being a dancer has given me a drive and discipline that has carried me though many life challenges, without out it I probably would have been lost. What I am most proud of is that I have sustained being a full time Performer for 20 years. One can say being male your chances of success are greater since it’s a predominantly a female profession. However I have had to work really hard to get to where I am. I have learned that staying focused and determined has lead me to continuous opportunities and that having a good work ethic is paramount. I want people to remember that I passionately love what I do and I hope it shows in my performances.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I was creating an itinerary for a friend’s trip to the city I’d start in my neighborhood, in Harlem. Harlem has lots of great restaurants and an energy unlike any other part of the city. The next place I would take them is to Central Park. I would suggest that we rent CitiBikes and ride around the loop of the park, taking in all the sites. You can’t come to New York City without seeing a Broadway show, so the next stop would be the theater district. I love dance so I would try to get tickets to a dance performance at the Joyce theater or an immersive show like Sleep No More. I am a big foodie and love China Town, there are so many great places to choose from. Lastly, I would have to take them to the top of one of the iconic skyscrapers to see a view like no other in the world.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to say my Husband Jimmy and my family and friends. They have always supported me throughout it all.
