We had the good fortune of connecting with Barrett Maki and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barrett, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Being intentional with personal development has been the key. Adding value to yourself will ultimately result in adding value to others! When the leader gets better everyone gets better!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When you ask people about why they got into the field they are in a common response is, “because I want to help people.” I love that answer but I think too many of us let that put us in a box. We feel that we have to become a nurse or a doctor in order to “help” people. I’m here to encourage you that you already have a platform, so use it! I know my early mentors at work when I was a low level associate helped me through numerous tough life situations and now I have the opportunity to do that in return. I’m in the business of servant leadership (which is what In-N-Out teaches). It doesn’t matter if it’s a customer or one of my associates I’m always going to do my best to help, counsel, listen, encourage, coach and make your day better. It’s the small things in life that can make the biggest impact! No matter what job your at it’s important to use your stage! Wether it’s one person or 100,000 people don’t take it lightly! Now In-N-Out is not tied to my podcast at all. However, they are the ones who inspired my to start one. Many people ask me why I started one a podcast in the first place. I simply tell that it’s for the personal growth. I’m continuing to work on my public speaking, thought process, content creation, consistency, interviewing skills and teaching abilities. Every single day my goal is to get 1% better. I believe God has big plans for every person and it’s up to us to be ready and willing to take on his calling.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Obviously we would go to In-N-Out burger! Yes, even after 11 years of working there I still look forward to eating it every chance I get. Reunion Tower is amazing and a must see in my opinion. I also love going to Clyde Warren Park. I love the food trucks there! We also have incredible church’s and gyms in the area. Buffalo Creek Crossfit is my gym of choice and worshipping or going to one of the events at The Oaks Church is always incredible.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In-N-Out Burger deserves this shoutout. In-N-Out has given me the business and leadership skills to run a store, but more importantly it has equipped me to become the best version of myself. Most people might think it’s just a “restaurant” or even a “fast food restaurant” but that’s where we will disagree. In-N-Out has developed their own leadership/personal growth/business classes that have truly impacted my life. It has even inspired me to start my own podcast, Growing Through Life! The owned Lynsi has taught us more about CARE than I thought possible. By her love and leadership her people grow to make the world a better place! The impact goes much further than just the restaurant. I’ve had many mentors through INO and a few to name would be Rob Depwig and Rick Ellis! Rob taught me how to analyze numbers and make the best decisions from what the numbers were saying and Rick taught me about emotional intelligence and how to gauge how your people feel.
