We had the good fortune of connecting with Asiah Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Asiah, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind my success is what I choose to live by everyday. The key words would be confidence, you have to believe in yourself before you expect anyone else to. Execution, because when you have everything within you to create you just have to go out and do it. Determination and endurance as well, the faith that everything will work out how it is supposed to as long as you keep working hard.Furthermore, to never be in a rush on the way up, you got to have patience in the process and enjoy the roller coaster and the view.Lastly, staying true to your identity and where you came from, not allowing any distractions to deter you from your vision.
Nothing in life happens TO you, it happens FOR you. I always take my hardships and challenges in life and capitalize off of them to make my situation better. I apply that to my photography as well because failure is necessary for growth.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel what sets my art apart from others is the feeling you get from them, and who I am behind the camera. I want the people I take photos of to always feel comfortable in their own skin and believe they deserve the showcasing of who they are. Picking up photography was not as hard for me in the beginning because my true talent is finding the positives and beauty in everything. However, learning the settings was something I struggled with, but I attacked the issue just as I do anything else, just doing it. You can’t have a fear of failure it’s going to teach you more than avoiding it will or being “perfect” all the time would. Something I would want the world to know is to always bet on yourself, and be patient in your faith. Also, that it is crucial that you have great character/morals, what you do behind the scenes makes all the difference.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots to eat are probably the Biscuit bar, OMG Tacos (I think i’m one of their top customers on Uber eats), Chiloso, and everyone close to me knows I can get down with some Texas Roadhouse! Some places I like to visit for the views would probably be White rock lake, or Margaret Mcdermott Bridge in the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give my shoutout to my family and closest friends for supporting and encouraging me to keep going, and giving me the space to express myself creatively. Also, my community of creatives I surround myself with for the inspiration and always bringing my name up in the rooms they should be in, thinking of me, even in their own endeavors. The collaboration of all of us trying to have a seat, knowing we can share the table. As well as all the talented models I work with on a consistent basis, allowing me to showcase my craft through them and their individuality. Most importantly, God for giving me a talent to live in my purpose and bring joy to others.
