We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking combined with being driven and having alot of faith has taken me far in my entrepreneurial career. Being a small business owner and taking risks especially big risks can be really scary especially in new territory. I also feel personally without risk there is no growth, therefore you miss out on oppourtunities to grow your business and get your business noticed. Cash flow and being profitable is something i consider before making any decision in my business. I’ve also learned that each stage of business comes with it’s own challlenges for example marketing, sales, strategy, production and most importantly always being able to adapt to change.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I always say i didn’t choose the candle life it chose me. Hey ya’ll my name is Ashley and i am the owner and creator of Ash Roc Candle. I create handmade soy candles and vegan bath and body products straight out of my kitchen in Austin Texas. I’ve been in business going on 4 years and i absolutely love what i do. Ash Roc Candle originally started out of pure curiosity and ended up being love at fist candle pour. My business stands for everything self love and self care. I create beautiful hand crafted candles and bath treats to help you destress, relax and unwind. In the begining stages there were lots of challenges, like how do i turn my hobby into a real business? For example pouring a few candles is totally different from pouring a few hundred candles. I also had to create systems to effectivley run my business and keep up with orders, inventory and most importantly time. As well as dealing with suppliers being out of stock of inventory, building relationships with vendors and keeping a calm head in business when things go wrong. These things could make or break a business especially in the beginning stages. My favorite thing about business is the product creation process, i love getting my hands dirty making candles and colorful fun, smell good, relaxing bath goodies. One thing most people don’t know is i spend more time on the business end then the production end. I learning something new about business every day, including knowing when to say no and not overextend myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Austin Tx, the best things happen outside, as an austinite who was born and raised here i have the inside dish on some great local sites. Mount Bonnell is the perfect spot to take in a sunset over the lake, the city and the famous arches of the Pennybacker Bridge. Lady Bird Lake is great for kayaking and paddleboarding, while your out check out the birds, fishing and wild life around the lake. “I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MURAL” This famous mural is located on the lively South Congress Ave filled with lots of local shops and great eats.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A few of my biggest influences come from social media seeing like minded women who share similar passions not only motivates me but lights a fire under my butt to work harder and never give up on making my dreams a reality.
