We had the good fortune of connecting with Armando Sebastian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Armando, why did you pursue a creative career?
Since I can remember I was always drawing and sketching, I also grew up traveling every summer to Mexico City. I remember we’d go for long walks in downtown and visiting museums and ancient ruins sites, I think that really made a significant impact in my early years. I first wanted to become a fashion designer and I designed costumes for some plays in Monterrey Mexico where I’m am originally from. As the time went by, I found myself leaning more towards painting so that’s why I decided to pursue my career as an Artist.

Let’s talk shop. Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a self-taught Artist, so I think I’ve improved my craft over the years that has a naive element to it, and it comes from the heart and my personal experiences in life. One of the things I’m proud of is the way I’ve been able to develop a personal style and the way I tell stories in my work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have friends visiting often from Mexico and Spain, I love to show them around there are great places in Dallas “The Rustic” is the best for a late dinner on Friday nights specially if they’ll have a good band playing in the outdoor stage, they serve the best signature Margaritas in town! I love collecting things so we would probably go to the Design district and check out some antique stores and to Dragon street to look at some art. The best traditional Mexican food can be found at “El Huarache”! By Bachman lake I also love going to Deep Ellum “Picole” has really good Paletas! One of my favorite places to go is the Dallas Arboretum and also the Bars and Restaurants in the Oak Lawn area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am lucky to have very supportive parents even though they were hesitant of my decision of becoming an Artist when I was younger, especially my mom who always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I could say that she is the one who can take the credit for the things I’ve accomplished in my career, growing up in Mexico things were not easy so they worked very hard for us and always making sure that we were exposed to Art and experiences that could stimulate my imagination I guess she saw something in me and decided to cultivate that.
