We had the good fortune of connecting with Ari Oliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ari, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
This is a question that I used to battle with a lot. How do I know when it’s time to throw in the towel? Makeup and beauty is something that I am truly passionate about. When I have those days when doubt begins to settle in; I look at how far I’ve come, I look at my progression in my skills. I take all of those factors into consideration and the good always outweigh the bad. That’s how I know to keep going. Most importantly, I remind myself why I started and what am I ultimately trying to accomplish.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Six years ago, I started my journey with makeup, I loved the way I could enhance my beauty with just a few strokes of a makeup brush lol. When I first started, the goal was never to be a makeup artist, I just wanted to be able to do my face really well. Eventually I got really good at it and people kept telling me that I should do others faces as well. Again, that was never part of the goal lol. Shortly after, I announced that I would be taking clients and I can honestly say, it’s been an amazing journey thus far. Don’t get me wrong, I have my days when I feel like businesswise, I should be further along, but I have to stop and simply just thank God for the journey within itself. Being in the beauty industry defiantly isn’t for the weak, you won’t be booked and busy every day, there are some down moments. Once I learned that, I decided to expand my business. This year I overcame my fears and launched Ari Cosmetics, my own cosmetics line. I currently offer 6 different shades in our matte flawless foundation. A cosmetic line is something that I had been wanting to do for a while, I just never knew when the right time was. It was defiantly a lot of work, but I am so proud of it! If there is anything I want the world to know about my brand is that us women use makeup has an enhancer of natural beauty. It’s not a need, it’s wanted. I think some have the wrong perception of us who choose to wear makeup. We’re not trying to hide or cover up who we are, we just want to add a little pop, be a little extra when heading out. I feel all women are beautiful without it, but when we put it on, it takes our confidence to another level and this is nothing wrong with that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being still fairly new to Dallas, I myself am still trying to figure out the best places to hangout lol. Dinner wise, I would suggest Perry’s Steakhouse, that has to be my favorite upscale restaurant so far. If they are wanting to have a fun filled night, I would recommend Cafe 214. My friends and I have a good time every time we go there. For the most part, I like to do daytime activities, the mimosa walk is always a good time as well. Just different things like that are where I would usually take someone who is visiting.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to my oldest sister, Monchell. There is absolutely nothing that I can[‘t come to her about rather its business ideas or even when I feel like my life is crashing down. Not only is she a great listening ear, but she is also my voice of reasoning. My sister has helped me in more ways than I have time to explain lol. She is always pushing me to be the best version of myself, and I appreciate her so much for that, because we all know that here lately life has been life’n and it is so important to have someone in your corner that you can fall back on. I remember when I first told her that I was hosting my first beauty expo, with no hesitation, she was all in! We had endless phone calls and text messages to make sure it was planned out perfectly. With that being my biggest event thus far, she flew from California and was right by my side, filling in wherever I needed her. That alone meant the world to me.
