We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Watkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is the single factor that separates those who are average from those who are great. Every time you decide to do something new and put your brand on the line, you’re taking a risk. However, I believe that risk should be calculated, and one should take risks according to their level of expertise. Honestly, I think there’s a misconception that risks have to be extreme, “go big or go home.” I don’t necessarily agree with that. I think you are setting yourself up for failure if you haven’t begun to get comfortable with the small things. If you want to start a media company that only takes pictures of A-List musicians in concert, go for it! Put yourself out there! You’d better have gotten comfortable taking photographs at the elementary school talent show; otherwise, you’re risking thousands of dollars and your brand reputation. No one wants ugly photos.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much to do in Dallas that the itinerary would differ depending on which friend was is in town. I would definitely do Brunch in Deep Ellum just to get a taste of the culture in Dallas that night. I would definitely like dinner at Haywire. When I first moved to Dallas, I was amazed at all the exotic cars just parked along the streets. The Stockyards, the Botanical Garden, and a tour of AT&T Stadium are all top of the list.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my father, Anthony Watkins, Sr, and A/A Video Productions. He went from full-time machinist at a steel plant to full-time photographer. He is why I picked up a camera in the first place. It all started at the age of 8 years, and my responsibility was “capture everything that I can’t see” Ever since then, I hadn’t put it down.
