We had the good fortune of connecting with Ann Akins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ann, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

I’ve always loved fashion and decided to start my own company about 8 years ago selling fashion clothes and accessories which is DH Fashion shop. Fast forward: I had an idea to get into customizing clothing and to learn how to sew. November 2020, I was put into the hospital and admitted into ICU.

I remember thinking I haven’t done everything I wanted to do in life… And said if I make it through this, I’m going to do everything I always wanted to do and travel as much as possible. I was released from the hospital after a few weeks, and I remained in and out the hospital for months…A lot of people never knew what was going on. I was 39 and, on a walker, Not being mobile much I learned how to sew, and I got better and better. I started a second company which is Fashion Junkie Club.(Customized Business)

December 2021, I posted a Camo Jacket I customized for 50-cent DJ Ambassador DJ Kayotik, and my talent was noticed. With all that has happened I never let that setback of being sick kill my dream…I kept going!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I design and customize clothing; I can turn a regular outfit into a masterpiece. I’ve customized Sweatsuits, Jeans, Hoodies, T-shirts and more.
I’m also known for my creative Camouflage Jackets. I design and customize them based on my client’s personality, business etc. Fun fact: My clients want to be surprised. Meaning they trust me to design a one-of-a-kind jacket for them.
The look on their face when they receive them is everything to me. That’s what keeps me going to change how we look at fashion.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Once they arrive, we would go to Deep Ellum to ride around on scooters and try different restaurants. I’m a big foodie person so looking up the best place would be simple.
But to stay on track I would create the below schedule for the week after the first outing in Deep Ellum.

Monday- Early morning visit the Star to check out the Dallas Cowboys practice field.
After that go to the Monday night Dallas Cowboy game.
Tuesday- Happy Hour and dinner at Salt Grass
Wednesday- Top Golf and dinner at Bobs steak house.
Thursday- Rangers Baseball Game and a little bar hopping in downtown Fort Worth. (7th st)
Friday- Dinner at Ruth Chris Steak House and visit a nice jazz club.
Saturday- Brunch, Skating, and dinner at Del Frisco’s
Sunday- Rooftop pool at Statler Dallas Hotel to recover from our amazing week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to credit my sister Tracey because when I told her about my idea to start designing and customizing, she was the first to place an order as well as help purchase supplies to start the new business venture. She deserves all the credit as well for who I am today. When we were younger, she stepped up to make sure I had everything needed growing up and I will forever be grateful for her. Having someone that’s supportive in your life is very important and I’m just thankful that person was my sister.
