We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has played a huge part in where i am today in my career. I graduated high school in 2013 and went immediately to college at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Going into my first semester i knew my major was going to be chemistry and knew i wanted to be a dentist. Well, at least i thought. After my first year i took some time off and thinking i decided dentistry wasn’t the right path for me. At this time my sister went to school for esthetics and she is who inspired me to become an esthetician. I fell in love with the aesthetics community once i saw what changes it could make to your self esteem. I took the risk of making way less money to be happy doing what i love. I always say you never know what could of happen if you don’t try. Being an esthetician there are so many risks you have to take experimenting with ingredients to learn what works and what doesn’t. As an esthetician we push boundaries when learning on our own skin first. I always take the risk of burning, scaring(pigmenting) my skin doing strong concoctions on myself because i know how to reverse the damage and it teaches me what NOT to do on a potential client.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Where do i even start? The journey to where i am definitely wasn’t easy. I got my Esthetician license March 13, 2020. Three days before the world shut down due to COVID. That was probably one of the most discouraging moments in my life. I had quit my job one month prior to receiving my license only to be told i couldn’t work. I wasn’t able to use my license for FOUR months! That’s a long time to not work. Once i finally got to work, i got my first job as an Esthetician and for the first time ever i broke out with cystic acne due to wearing a mask. As an esthetician society expects us to have the most perfect skin which isn’t realistic, we’re human and we break out too. Since i was new to the industry the “maskne” gave me my first opportunity to experiment with how to fix the problem. I’m most proud of the knowledge i’ve been able to gain over the three years i’ve been licensed and having my clients be able to trust me with their skin. Thats a full time job within itself. The one thing i’ve learned is to always wake up and have the mindset that its going to be the best day of your life and trust the universe. When you have that mindset great things come when you’re least expecting them.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are two people i’d like to shout out for supporting me and giving me guidance and support in the industry. The first is Sarah Guerrero, my sister. She is the reason i’m in the beauty industry and the reason i found a passion for what i do. It started out as her teaching me how to do make up to “make extra money”. After learning i quickly found that doing other people’s make up isn’t as fun as your own face. That’s when i fell in love with skin care and decided to enroll at Paul Mitchell the School Dallas. Over the course of my career she has been so supportive whether it be being a model for a new treatment or just answering any questions i have about anything i don’t have the answer to. She’s been by my side since day 1 and im so grateful shes always been in my corner routing for me.
Second, is my boss. Brandi Conedera she took a chance on me when she hired me and im so thankful. Brandi and i share a similar vision for what we want to happen with our work. That is RESULTS for every client that comes in. Working for Brandi she has allowed me to have creative freedom over how i choose to treat my clients skin. She puts all of her trust in me to push the limits to create my own protocols and treatments. The only way to learn is by experimenting and pushing the limits. For that, i would like to thank Brandi for allowing me to use my knowledge to be creative to achieve the goals my clients want.
