We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel De La Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angel, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Spending time with my family makes me super happy. Before I started my business, I was in Law Enforcement for 11 years. During that time my children were young, I was a single parent, and I had to miss a lot of holidays and family functions due to work. Now I have the freedom to spend time with my family and my new grandbaby whenever I want and I absolutely love that I have that opportunity.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In the beginning when I first started Susie Skull, LLC I was just making cement planters and a few other handmade goods. I have expanded my brand significantly since then. Resin was thrown into the mix and I began making earrings, décor, and keychains. I also started coating my skull planters in resin and it just gave them a whole new vibe. I now also make t-shirts, custom glasses, and just started a Susie Skull candle line. I am constantly thinking of new items that I can make for my brand and how to improve current ones. I strive to make Susie Skull products eccentric and affordable for everyone. I think the diversity of my products and the prices set me apart from most businesses. I am so proud of how much Susie Skull has grown and how my brand continues to develop. It’s hard work trying to create items, stay active on social media, run a household, and just live life while trying to operate a small business. It takes a lot of dedication and I realize that more and more as the months pass. I have learned you can’t grow business without putting in work and I think that is why a lot of small businesses don’t last because people don’t want to continue to put forth the amount of time and effort that it takes to keep it going. I do know that I have invested too much time, work, and love into my business to just give up. Susie Skull is here to stay.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely go to the Dallas Arboretum and the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. Right now in Fort Worth, it is Stock Show time so that would be somewhere else we would go. Places to eat and hang out at would be Kintaro Ramen, Gus’s World famous Chicken, Mercado Juarez, Tulips, The Sound at Cypress Waters, and Cidercade.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a big shoutout to my husband, Marco. If it wasn’t for him, I would have never ventured out into this small business world. He has supported me and had faith in me since day one. He is also a super big help and attends every single market with me. Thank you Marco, I am forever grateful!
