We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy McAdams-Gonzales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My husband, and now business partner, met at work over 20 years ago. He’s a writer. I’m a designer. After spending years working separately (Matt in journalism and then at local agencies and me running my own freelance graphic design business), we felt it was time to give it a go on our own. We’d always enjoyed whenever we were able to collaborate on creative projects and thought, given our complimentary skillsets, we could make a living doing good work for good people (and make a few new friends along the way). In January 2018 we launched Matinee Creative.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Matinee apart from other agencies is the way Matt and I work together and how that benefits our clients. Maybe it’s because we’re married, but we’re able to critique each other honestly and cut out the unnecessary bullshit which I think results in a better end product.
I also think we’re good listeners without any agenda other than to serve our clients. We’ll always give clients our honest advice and best recommendations, but we do so with their best interest at heart.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone was coming to Indy, we wouldn’t have to stray too far from our neighborhood for a great time!
We’d grab a Calvin Pepper from Calvin Fletcher Coffee Co. and grab a pastry at Amelia’s and take a walk down The Cultural Trail and sit at The Idle.
For lunch, we’d hit La Margarita in Fountain Square and I’d recommend anything with their vegan seitan chorizo.
After lunch, we could do some shopping in Fountain Square at Rooftop Fruit, Tuggles, Snakeroot, Indy Reads Books, and Zodiac Vintage.
Then, we’d do dinner and drinks at Bluebeard.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ryan Hunley from Second Street Creative. He’s my brother from another mother. We met at a local co-working space (Speakeasy) over 10 years ago and have been friends and collaborators ever since. Ryan has been a sounding board and support system for me both in work and in life. My work is definitely better because of him.
And also: Tonic Ball (an annual event to support Second Helpings here in Indianapolis) to thank. When I was a younger designer trying to make my mark in the city, I volunteered to design the event’s posters and promotional materials. It introduced me to some amazing people and allowed me to showcase my design skills.
