We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa West and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially, I began my journey with creating and setting up party decor. I have always been good with creating things digitally or being able to recreate something I’ve seen online. I was not yet into the baking side of things. I booked a few parties just from posting photos of me practicing and setting up my son’s, Traejin, birthday parties. I randomly decided one year to bake a cake for Traejin, along with decorating as well. Everyone loved the cake. It was my first time in a long time of following a recipe from scratch and it turned out amazing. From there, I slowed down on the decorating side of parties and started to perfect my craft of baking. I would get many requests from family and friends to a point where it started to feel like more than hobby baking. I came up with the name TAG Delysscious with the help of my amazing husband, Tray. It’s a combination of our initials, including our son, and a part of my name in De”lyss”cious. TAG also is an acronym for Treats & Gift.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a business owner is not easy at all. Let alone having a full-time career as well. It’s all about finding balance and to be completely honest it was not so easy for me in the beginning. It became easier over time to leave work at work. I had been so in the habit of saving things until later, but I quickly changed that so once I made it home I could focus on family and baking. A huge lesson I have learned and applied to my business daily is that someone is always watching. When I first began, I would get discouraged if I wasn’t receiving any orders or wait for it…likes on my post. Over time and with the encouragement of my support system, I knew I could not stop. I continued to make my post and bake even when nothing would sell. Then the following week or so I would be SOLD OUT! Prayer and dedication have brought me a long way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely recommend Brunchaholics! The vibe is so chill, food is amazing, and it’s also a Black-Owned Business!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely love to give a shoutout to Traveon, my husband. He is one of the reasons I’ve been able to be so successful. I have had a habit in the past of procrastinating, but not with him around. He is so encouraging and always has my best interest in mind. He is definitely my number one critic, but I appreciate every ounce of feedback he provides. He makes sure that I am always working toward perfecting my skills and I love him for that and so much more. Also, my mom has been very supportive. Once I purchase my treat truck and get rolling, she’s already purchased my decor to be on the walls and shelves. She promotes the hell out of me and I love the support she gives.
