We had the good fortune of connecting with Alfonso (Low Tone) Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alfonso (Low Tone), why did you pursue a creative career?
I wanted to showcase my talent. I also wanted to give people something to relate to. Money was never on my mind. Instead, my purpose was to inspire and give hope to people who come from the same type of environment that I come from.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s still in progress. In 2009, I was offered an independent deal. Being 19 years old at the time, I learned the shadiness of the music industry because of someone trying to take advantage of me. This made me no longer want to pursue a music career. Because of this, I took an 8 year hiatus. My love for battle rap, my bro in law’s music production talents and the subpart music on the radio is what inspired me to get back into the music. It’s not easy and takes a lot of work. I’m still building. The lesson I’ve learned is that it’s better to do it yourself. What sets me apart is that I’m not afraid to put my personal experiences on the line, even my least proud moments. I like to put a lot of truth and real life into my music.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a pretty simple person, so anywhere that has good food. My first choice would be tacos or wings. Maybe a sports bar, a sporting event like MMA or live football game. A music show such as Tech N9ne, Redman or Method Man, if they’re in town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My list is pretty long. I’d have to start with my 4th grade English teacher, Mrs. Washington. She’s the reason I learned about my rapping ability. My dad had on an influence on me with his singing abilities and taste for music. My mom’s struggle through divorce helped me appreciate life due to hard times. The circle of friends I was around and their musical talents also helped me pursue my dreams. There’s so many others I could name, but those are the people who laid the foundation for my love of the art.
