We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Herod and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Once I had learned of my cancer recurrence in October of 2020, I was connected with my now close friend, Linda. She is currently walking through her 6th cancer recurrence, and we were connected, because I really needed someone to help me on this walk. I was scared to death, and didn’t know what was about to be thrown at me, and Linda was such a calming voice to me throughout the entire time. We then realized that there really was not anything out there that helped other cancer warriors, or even caregivers, along this process. We found that there was tons of information about cancer in general, but not really anything on the day to day life with cancer…. ie: being a mom with cancer, marriage and cancer, having the low moments, hair loss and how it may or may not affect you, weather you should get a port or not, and the list goes on. So it was from that moment, that we decided to start a podcast, and Woven Together: Conversations That Started With Cancer, was born. We are two moms woven together with conversations that started with cancer living our everyday life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was first diagnosed with cancer in 2019, and it was shortly after that, that I decided I wanted to openly share my journey, and be as transparent as possible with those following along. I knew God was working within me, and guiding my every step. I also knew, if my story could reach one person, and bring them to Christ, then sharing the intimate details of my life throughout all of this was worth it. There is nothing more scary then opening up your heart, and sharing some of the most sacred parts of it with the world. I have learned along the way, that not everyone will support you, and the ones you thought would be there, sometimes aren’t; and the ones you least expected to be there, cheer you on the loudest. Once Linda, and I launched our podcast, Woven Together: Conversations That Started with Cancer, the outpouring we received from current cancer warriors, survivors, caregivers, friends, etc was fascinating. I knew that we had made the right choice moving forward with the podcast.

One of the most exciting chapters of this journey so far, has been the beautiful people I have been able to connect with, and hearing their stories. Almost everyone at some point in their life will be affected by cancer in one way or another, wether it is themselves having a cancer diagnosis, or someone they know. Being able to walk alongside of them, and support them how they need is truly one of the most rewarding experiences I have had throughout all of this. Allowing Him (God), to show me the beauty from ashes, is priceless.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many fun places around town, but to start our fun day out we would head down to the Dallas Farmer’s Market. I always enjoy being in the heart of downtown, walking around and enjoying the sites and fun treats the market has to offer. We’d grab a drink at JuiceBabe, and then stroll through the shops. One of my most favorite places to visit is Nikki Smith Designs. She seriously has the best modern jewelry, and it is crazy affordable! Once we were done hanging out at the market, we would head over to the Dallas World Aquarium and enjoy the sites they have to offer. From the funny penguins, most adorable manatee, to the loveable sloth, we would enjoy all the fun animals, and fish they have available to see. From there we would head to Legacy West in Plano for a yummy lunch and drinks at the Food Hall With so many options to choose from you are sure to find something you will love. To finish the night off, we will head over to Bob’s Chophouse for the steak of your life. Actually, the entire menu is so delicious, you may have to order more than 1 meal!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been so blessed, and loved on throughout my entire cancer journey. I have had some of the most amazing support as my co-host and I started our podcast, Woven Together: Conversations That Started with Cancer. Without the love and support from my husband, parents, and dear friends, Woven Together, would have never come to life. I am so grateful to my family, and to the special people in my life who have held my hand throughout my entire walk. And to my brave son, who has walked alongside of me with his head held high, and cheering me on every step of the way! I love you all dearly… Thank you will never seem like it is enough.
