We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandria Hulslander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandria, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue a creative career because there’s far more opportunity for fun with creativity, and it’s something I feel passionate about. As a writer, every aspect of what I do is creative as I get to create scenes, stories, content, and more with the power of my words. It may be a harder path to walk down, as getting published regularly and having income from that can be tricky, but it’s also extremely rewarding when I do see my name online or in print. My path is not clear, and I find that exciting because it means there are different directions I can go with my career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel what sets me apart as a writer the most is that I don’t write for an audience or a group of people, I write solely for myself. Everything I create is something I would want to read and I write it exactly how I want it to go because it makes me happy. A lot of people write to gain an audience or become famous, but I write because I love it and I want to love what I write. Career-wise, I would say I’m not quite where I would want to be as I still have to maintain a full-time job, so the current challenge is building up myself as an author and getting out there enough to be stable, a significant challenge to face! I still have a ways to go and a lot to learn, but I do find myself learning from others online and making better choices for my career. I hope that one day I can sit back and enjoy writing for myself without the stress or exhaustion of work, and can share my story with others to inspire them to follow the path they want to take.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would focus on one main activity a day and base food choices on the area we’re in, plus some good home cooked meals! One day we would go to Asia-Town in Carrolton to explore Kinokunya, Teso, Daiso, get snacks at 85 Bakery, and eat at K-Dog! We’d plan an Arboretum day, hopefully during one of the seasonal events, and eat at the Smokey Rose across the street right after. The Dallas Aquarium downtown is a great activity too, with good food options inside to enjoy and fun merch. Depending on if they have visited before, a tour of downtown is a great way to learn about Dallas history, and checking out historical neighborhoods that have been maintained. The Plano/Frisco overlap area also has some delicious eats such as Nikugen, Kyuramen, Marufuku Ramen, and more! No matter what, there are plenty of things to do!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Ralph, deserves a loud shoutout for all his encouragement and support of me. He has helped me out of my lowest points, both physically and mentally, kept me going as I left a toxic job, and helps keep me positive as I struggle with work/life balance & exhaustion from my current job. He reads everything I write, encourages me to write whenever I mention that I want to, and has helped me build a creative and motivational environment in our home. I truly could not be where I am today without him, and I know that he will continue to build me up and help me along my journey, no matter where it takes me.
