We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Farber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandra, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I am a hyper-organized person, partially because of my OCD anxiety diagnoses. Organization helps me feel relaxed, but the habit of staying organized shows up and helps me succeed in my work all the time. Whether it is being super clear on deadlines, detail oriented in my work, or inspiration for how to approach a subject, my organization habits provide powerful backbone to my ideas.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My cross-medium style of choreography and visual art sets me apart as a female creative in two ordinarily separate categories. I combine my knowledge in both visual art and movement art in a way that is unique to me. The challenges of being a female are still something that plague me all the time; particularly in the dance world, I have had to work much harder than male counterparts to get in the door, but the hard work has paid off in a tenacity that is unstoppable within me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love all of the hidden nature gems we have in DFW, from the Fort Worth nature reserve to White Rock Lake; hikes there would definitely be a part of the itinerary. For food and drinks, I couldn’t recommend Salsa Limon more, and they are big art supporters (and makers!) as well. We are spoiled for choice with museums- the DMA, the Modern, the Dallas Contemporary, the Kimbell, the Amon Carter, all are on my list frequently.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Contingent Ballet, a 501(c)3 created by my good friend and collaborator Silken Kelly.
