We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Tyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I conceptualize taking risks similarly to springboard diving or another scored sport. The higher the difficulty the greater the possible awarded score. The execution quality of the risk ultimately equates to the total positioning gain or loss.
Perhaps comically cliché, I’m a gay realtor who perceives business risk as a springboard diving competition. Heightening my perspective, I’m a space command veteran who perceives war as weaponized real estate negotiation, ultimately sorted out with the pen rather than the sword. Enlightened by the fact I’m a child refugee from a divided and war-torn Europe. I’ve moved over thirty times across three continents/countries, eight states, and thirteen metropolitan areas.
Moving away is a risk we take for a better life. Dismantling our past in exchange for a better future. Moving in is a design expression of our projected growth paths. Each design decision a socio-cultural risk wrapped in hope. With each move, I set forth with the intent of becoming the best version of myself, personally and professionally.
When I was in the process of moving to Dallas from Austin: I found an apartment with a view of Down Town in Oaklawn, switched brokerages to KWUD in Turtle Creek, and gave myself a year to find the love of my life somewhere around town. If grad school taught me anything, it is that, even the best plan won’t survive the market. I met the love of my life, moved into his place in Plano, and we were under contract on a two bedroom apartment in Knox Park before my Oakland dream was even available for move-in.
The risk of moving to a new city while starting a new career with the goal of finding love is equivalent to the most difficult of dives, that few ever attempt. I made a big splash and won!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I began my career in real estate as an executive assistant for a broker and developer, husband and wife team in Paradise Valley, AZ when I was in college. Then the crash of 2008 happened, the firm dwindled from three hundred plus realtors, contractors, and support staff down to three of us holding on for better days that came too late. During that time I was passed down the most powerful Mac Pro on the market and told to redesign all the advertising campaigns for their holdings which included a golf club, apartment and retail complexes, sports memorabilia franchise, and real estate brokerage.
Back then I didn’t know who I was, or what I was doing on photoshop. However, I was an expert at mimicking and emulating in order to blend into my surroundings. As the military mantra states, “perception is reality”. I ethnographically immersed myself in the cultural groups of each project and projected my interpretation and findings through the design programs of the time. Ethnographic observation continues to target and hone my designs.
As a listing agent I design marketing as though the home is looking for a new family to love and facilitate their new life.
As a buyers agent I present opportunities by understanding, comprehending, and interpreting each persons complex dreams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My “DalYaas” Itinerary is as follows:

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thanks to the supportive safety net my parents created yet never had or benefited from, I have been able to boomeranging around the world. Going further and further with each pass back home.
