We had the good fortune of connecting with Alesha Lofton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alesha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
God has blessed me with some awesome gifts and talents that are changing lives! I lead by example and with integrity. I am a valuable resource to many as I inspire and motivate minorities to be successful in all areas of their lives. When most people won’t share their knowledge and expertise with others due to their own selfish ways and/or afraid of competition, I, on the other hand, am not built like that! I knew that I had what it takes to start my own businesses and show others how to do the same, especially the black and brown community.
I had my 1st child at the age of 15 and I started my 1st job at McDonald’s 8 weeks after giving birth to my son EJ. I have been working ever since. My mother, whom was my inspiration, dropped out of school in the 6th grade to pick cotton. When she relocated from Little Rock, AR to Tulsa, OK, she enrolled in vocational school to finish school and become a nurse. She had a passion for children. She worked as a nurse for 30 years and decided she wanted to start her own daycare. I helped my other as a teenager with the paperwork and management aspect of her business. Her story motivated me, as I wanted to be my own boss. I saw the flexibility and control that she had over her schedule and she made some good money, which inspired me to want my own businesses!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner and operator of Dream Team 3 Adjusting Academy, LLC. Our motto is “No Adjuster Left Behind” I started my journey as an Independent Adjuster during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 after putting in 10 years at Cigna that ended in a layoff due to outsourcing to India. My cousin, Tabitha Gamble, is always talking me into doing something that makes money! Being an Independent Adjuster was one of them. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always wanted to teach; however, nobody would hire me (I have earned my Associates, Bachelors and Masters degrees). I noticed in 2018 that minorities were not receiving the assistance we needed to get started in our careers as Adjusters. I did my research, discovered Matt Allen with AdjusterTV and made phone calls and that’s when my brand, Your Adjuster Homegirl was born. In 2019, Dream Team 3 Adjusting Academy was established.
What I am most proud of is the lives I am changing in this industry! This industry was a hidden gem from the minority community! It is possible to earn 6 figures within 1-3 months in this industry during major natural disasters as a field property Independent Adjuster! You can earn good money as an inside, desk or remote adjuster as well. I have watched my students go from nothing to building homes from the ground up, purchasing cars with no car payment, start businesses and living their dreams!
Although the biggest class I’ve had was a class of ten students, I know that God is going to multiply those numbers because I keep Him 1st in all that I do, giving Him the honor, praise and glory in it all. What set me apart from other adjusting schools and Instructors is my passion and dedication to provide the knowledge, resources and my expertise to help others be successful. I offer professional resume services, a mentoring program, pre-licensing courses, continuing education courses and a variety of trainings. I also go live to educate policyholders, like I did during the Texas freeze. Many don’t understand their policies and know what they are eligible and not eligible for. I love to EDUCATE EVERYONE!
I’ve learned that as God continues to elevate me, I lose friends and associates that are jealous of my success. I learned that it is still challenging to be a highly successful educated black woman in this world.
I overcome challenges by keeping God 1st! Dream Team 3 Adjusting Academy has a spiritual meaning. While others look up to celebrities, sports figures, etc., I look to my Dream Team 3 for everything-My Holy Father, My brother Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that guides and protects me every day on this journey called life. With a winning team like that, how can I lose?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a best friend (I don’t have one of those) that was visiting DFW and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I would take them to my kitchen 1st! Oklahoma Style Catering is my catering business that was established in 2010! We serve you 918 Style! When I don’t feel like cooking, we are going to eat some soul food at Madea’s in Everman (Near Fort Worth). I am a DJ (I go by the name DJ 918) and I love music. I also love to dance. After we eat at Madea’s, we are heading to Memphis Live in Addison. My favorite band that performs there is Mars Hill Band, whom will be performing at my 1st Annual Adjuster Sneaker Ball on February 25, 2023 at the Hilton on the Lake in Rockwall, TX. Visit our website or Eventbrite to purchase your tickets. Mexican food is my favorite food. Next we are hitting up Frida’s Tacolandia on Kiest Blvd for birria tacos. Bedford Icehouse is another place that I enjoy going to. The atmosphere, bar food and live bands are awesome. Thibodeaux’s Cajun Cookin’ in Duncanville is a great spot to have drinks, eat good food and enjoy live music. It is so many awesome preachers here. So to get the word, we would go to my church, Friendship Baptist Church of The Colony and other pastors that I love to hear is Tony Evans (Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship) and Paster Freddie Haynes (Friendship West Baptist Church)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God 1st! My mother, Nancy Anderson (she died in 2005), Deborah Brown, my high school teachers and guidance counselors, Tom Joyner (I was one of his most memorable Thursday Morning Mom’s), Tyler Perry, (He heard about my story and I got to have dinner with him and the cast of the play, “I Know I’ve Been Changed”, Qeionna Dickerson, Lashawna Young, Kenneth Mathess and my 3 children, EJ (he helped save my life), Alanna and Cheyenne
