We had the good fortune of connecting with Akea Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my business was I saw a need in my community among young adults. While I worked as a Director of Human Resources I saw that a lot of individuals suffered and lacked the basic interviewing skills necessary to succeed. I remember praying to God for guidance and I was later then equipped with the tools necessary to start my business. I always knew I would start a business, but I had no idea that The Resume Chop Shop would be such a success. I thought I would just help some individuals in my neighborhood and at the local high school. Little did I know that I would be attracting international and national clientele. Working in Human Resources has all been my passion because I love to help people, but when I see my clients receive those job offers with my assistance it let’s me know that my though process was right on point.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets The Resume Chop Shop apart from many is my dedication and passion. If I have the ability to help you succeed I will stop at nothing to ensure you do just that. My proudest moments are seeing those offer letters from my clients or when they tell me they applied to their dream job with a company and they got the job or interview. It’s just the best feeling in the whole wide world. It’s just amazing to see the smiles on their faces. How I got to where I am today in business is staying motivated and optimistic. In my opinion, your dedication towards being successful separates the playing field and the competition. It was not easy at all. Being a single mom of two amazing humans and trying to learn how to market and advertise during the pandemic was frustrating because there was so much to learn. It was so new to me, but I didn’t back down. I started making other entrepreneurial friends and starting learning from them so I can be successful and learn the small business way of life. Owning a small business and being an entrepreneur is not for the week. The statement “Only The Strong Will Survive” is the proper go-to phrase to be successful. When someone sees the brand Akea Collins, Consulting & Services I want them to know they are getting exactly what they paid for. They will get the best services and products that I have to offer. It will not lack.. I want them to also understand that I was in their shoes at one point and I know what it feels like to work towards a goal. I put all my heart in effort into everything that comes from my company and I want my clients to feel that effort when they receive their product or service.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest when my friends visit I try to experience new restaurants and adventures with them. I live life very spontaneously so I always want to try new food and see new things, I have a running lists of places I see on Facebook and we go try them together,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to three individuals. My first shoutout goes to my bestie Tiffynee Terry-Thomas because the day I decided to start my business she was on the receiving end of my rant in May 2019. I remember being so disappointed with potential employees during their interviewing process. I was really hurt that a lot of individuals had no clue how to conduct an interview or compile a decent resume. And I remember she asked me what was I going to do about it. I told her I would start my own mock interview & resume company called Interview Me Now LLC. My second shoutout goes to my cousin Dr. James McGary III because in late March 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic I told him I needed to rebrand. He sat on the phone with me for days and we spit out names left and right. Then The Resume Shop Chop was born and it was just the boost I needed to assist 250 customers in 2020! My third shoutout goes to my lifetime bestie Reba Quattlebaum for the simple fact that she is an amazing pivot coach. I remember calling her late last year and telling her I needed to increase my revenue and she gave me some strategies that aided me in the process of transitioning to the next level. These three individuals have been so important in my success. We have frequent accountability calls and they definitely keep me on track. They’re so amazing!! This is the very reason that they’re small businesses are a success as well.
