Meet Adrick Phan | young Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrick Phan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adrick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My high school graduation was approaching, and everyone kept asking me what my plans were after high school. I knew that going to college would not be for me and I had no job lined up, so I had to figure something out. I ran across freeze dried candy online but could not figure out how to try it without it being melted by the time it got delivered to me with this Texas heat. So I thought, why not make it myself? I brought up the idea to my mom and asked her if I could use my graduation money on a freeze dryer? She did not think it was a bad idea and we agreed if all else fails, we could use it to stock up for an apocalypse. After we started making the candies, we were reaching out to our friends and family to get our name out there. That is when we started doing small pop ups and eventually going to bigger events. After about 6 months into it, we finally found a store front at Asia Times Square so that our customers would not have to look for us at different events if they are local.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is not as easy as people may think. We do not just stick it in a freeze dryer and make money. Being one of the first few freeze dried candy businesses, we really had to spend time experimenting on how to make these candies. You can barely find any instructions on how to make these candies online. The Texas heat and moisture also made it harder for our candy to come out correctly. I had to play scientist and write down all our formulas until it came out right and consistent. Another thing readers should know is that this business did not come easy for me. No one thought that we could make it as far as we did. They thought I was too young and did not see the potential in this business. But through hard work, dedication, and word of mouth; I was about to establish K Puffs to what it is now.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a foodie and a gamer so they will be entertained and full all week. Asia Times Square could fill our stomachs many times. Dim Sum at the Pearl, Pho at the food court, Mongolian hot pot at Little Sheep, and desserts at Mochi Donut, Two Hands Corn Dogs and Meccha Matcha. They also have Clutch Em claw machines upstairs for entertainment. We could also go to Parks mall for Round 1 for more games. Other food places we could go to is Orchid City for fusion food, Asian Nights for Laos food, and Hatsuyuki for sushi. I would also take them to get boba from Rocket Belly which is where you can make your own boba drink. We could also go hang out at the food park and eat Vaqueros Texas BBQ, because you know Texas has the best bbq if they are from out of state. We could also go play pickleball from Chicken N Pickle, it has a nice outdoor scenery if the weather is good. Last but not least we would hit up Indigo Plateau which is an outdoor market and is a great space to catch Pokemon and hang out with other Pokemon gamers.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom deserves a round of applause. If it wasn’t for her motivating and helping me, I would not have gone as far as I have without her. She works at all the events that I cannot and helps with so much more. I want to thank her for everything she has done and for believing in me.
My mom was the driving force that pushed me to where I am and I wouldn’t have done half of the things that I have without her believing in me.
