We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Dillard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelly, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
My artwork is inspired by nature. A lot of artists use nature to inspire their art. With my art being abstract it is not always the actual surrounding environment in the physical sense, but can be just a pattern, a repetition, a glimpse of light or of darkness. This sets the grounding of my work. This could be achieved by observing details in nature such as the twisting of vines, or the movement of wildlife or by the rustle of leaves or water. There is something about the natural world that inspires creativity and a sense of wonder. The ever changing patterns, of sounds, sights, smells, all of these are then incorporated into my paintings.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider my work to be Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionism is an art movement that emerged in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950. It is characterized by a focus on spontaneous, gestural mark-making and the exploration of the emotional state of the artist. While my art is inspired by nature, it is painted in an intuitive manner, full of gestural strokes and mark-making with a sense of movement and energy. My art is full of contradicitons, it can be dark and moody or bright and cheerful, quiet and calm or dynamic and energetic, creating a sense of interconnectedness and opposing forces. I am alway exploring new techniques and methods of expression. Viewers often comment that they find my work intriguing and a conversational piece.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In my opinion you can never go wrong with spending a day exploring art galleries around town or the art museums. Dallas has a vibrant and thriving art scene with plenty of options. This area has so many galleries to choose from!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I would like to thank God for creating such an amazing planet with endless possibilities of inspiration. Secondly, I would like to thank my spouse for supporting me in my art journey, and helping to open my eyes to see all the minute details in nature that requires a certain degree of attentiveness and curioisity. He has taught me to take the time to slow down and observe and appreciate the little things in nature that we might otherwise overlook. As I begin to notice more and more of these details, I start to gain a deeper connection with the natural world and a greater appreciation for its many wonders.
