We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Carrillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by the beauty of others. As a social worker & therapist, it gives me energy when I know that I am able to create meaningful relationships with my clients. The therapeutic relationship is such an intimate and important relationship. Artistically, when creating jewelry, I am also inspired by the beauty of others and the beauty that surrounds me daily. I love creating pieces that honor a woman’s body, mind, and the world around her!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started A Sisters Legacy in July of 2021. My experience working in non-profit and for-profit businesses left me feeling as though I did not know if I could ever be happy working for others. I consistently felt like my employers cared more about the income than they did if our clients were surviving or if their employees were set up for success. I finally decided I had to take a risk – so I started ASL. The business has transformed beautifully in the last (almost) two years. We are now able to provide free and low cost therapy for individuals in English and Spanish, in the DFW area and beyond. This is all possible through donations and jewelry sales. A Sisters Legacy charges $50 for a therapy session and we are able to help clients who are not able to afford services to receive the care they need.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love Bishop Arts, which is where our office is located. A Sisters Legacy is involved in a pop up or event of some sort most weekends so luckily for a friend (or unluckily) they would get to see some great art, wherever we’re at!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this to my sister, Marissa Ann Carrillo. A Sisters Legacy is all about Making Accessible Care in her honor. I would not be the person I am today without Marissa, my family, and my friends who all support my efforts to create change where change is needed.
